Pickpick

This TL story (folklore) that won the Coretta Scott King & Caldecott award. This story is about two young men who go on a journey to find this girl that one of them fell in love with. When all three are united, their journey back to town is full of twist and turns* caused by 3 zombie witches and 1 mean uncle) that test the powers of true friendship. This would be a book for a DR where there are many characters that children can play.

Estradan http://readingtokids.org/Books/BookView.php?pag=4&bookID=00000319 this resources offers an art activity where students can do a black crayon scratch drawing to replicate the illustrations from the book. These drawings could also be incorporated into the DR. This aligns with UDL 5.2 using multiple tools for construction and composition. It also aligns with ESOL strategy 30, encouraging as aids to identify and see relationships. #ucflae3414su19 5y
MeganKlein Wow this book sounds awesome! Will definitely add to my TBR book pile! Also, I LOVE this photo and your dog 😍 5y
DrSpalding I am so happy you read this book and of course I love your image! #shibainu #hiro #finn ❤️🐕 this book won the Caldecott for the beautiful images… Scratchboard technique! I had students create images just like the illustrator in my classroom. This is a Caribbean folk tale and in third grade you must teach about the Caribbean islands. This is a perfect read aloud during that social studies unit. 5y

This book is SO good. Clearly Finn did it. He‘s hiding something. I intend to find out what. I can‘t stop reading this book.

GingerAntics @Slajaunie Finn did it, right? He‘s guilty as sin of something. Thank you for posting about this book. MAN it‘s good. 6y

Slajaunie It was surprising. I had no idea. I thought maybe Ellen had a split personality. 6y
GingerAntics @Slajaunie that‘s exactly what I thought. I had this whole theory, especially with the “closer than you think” line I honestly thought there was never two sisters and she doesn‘t want to go back to Lewis because they all know she‘s barking mad there. For the last 1/3 of the book I was sure of it. Then he found all the Russian dolls. The ending was quite a twist. All I can say is if I die my red hair another colour, you can still tell it‘s me. lol 6y
Slajaunie That was a very strange twist but the author gave us a big clue. Layla took on her mother‘s personality when she died. I would still never have figured it out. 6y
GingerAntics @Slajaunie that‘s why I thought there was no Ellen. I thought Ellen was just one of Layla‘s personalities. 6y
GingerAntics @Slajaunie the ending really was better than all that. I really didn‘t see that coming. I almost want a sequel. Why is he just going off to jail and not fighting it? It seems so odd. The whole thing really was a head trip. (edited) 6y
Slajaunie Indeed! 6y
