This was a reread, but almost like reading it for the first time as it has been many years. Like Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, I first read this when I was a kid. As an adult I am amazed by how Mildred D. Taylor tackles the really ugly effects of racism in a middle-grade appropriate way without glossing over anything. That can‘t be easy to do.
