My first 5-Star read of 2019! Birdie is a half-Cree woman who grows up in northern Alberta. This novel touches on many themes of native life as well as themes common everywhere. This book focuses on her strength and the strength of her aunt, sistercousin, and friend as they all fight to bring her back from the brink. Excellent writing and engrossing story. #canadianlit #nativelit #diverselit
This is a family saga that takes place mostly on a Chippewa reservation in ND. Each chapter is narrated by a different member of the Nunapush/Lamartine or Kashpaw families. We learn of the past, their hopes, struggles, dreams, talents, and weaknesses. It is about love and grief and kindness with a touch of revenge and despair. #1001books #nativelit #diversereads #familysaga
A superb debut novel, in my opinion. Orange encapsulates modern Natives in ways that are salient, and in some that others may criticize as stereotypical. The style and narratives are unique, and he incorporates devices that are simple to read, but often complex to connect and navigate as his characters converge for the climax. Must read for anyone with an interest in Native American literature. #nativelit #nativeauthor #nativeamerican #indigenous
