I wanted to get a leg up on my ancient philosophy class before school this fall. I‘ve owned this copy for years, stopping and starting it in bursts. I wasn‘t able to get through it all before the semester began, but I did finish it afterwards.

One thing I will say about Plato‘s dialogues is that they are often arduous and boring, but after having read some on my own, then in a college setting, their greatness became so much more apparent to me.

Browsing through books associated with this one, I learned a new word: ‘incunabula‘. I looked at a book list someone had made, ‘Books about incunabula and post-incunabula‘ and saw wonderful names I knew from the Renaissance. Now, I‘m looking back on a special memory from when my husband and I went to the Philadelphia library, upstairs, in the antique book room. I stood inches away from these ‘incunabula‘! *GETS CHILLS*🤓📚😍🤣

rebcamuse Music historian here— we ❤️ incunabula! 4w
Thatbooknerd @rebcamuse oooooh if that‘s your specialty, I would love to know your thoughts on the demon butt cheek sheet music featured in Hieronymus Bosch‘s ‘Garden of Earthly Delights‘! 4w
rebcamuse @Thatbooknerd beyond what‘s already out there, I have no additional musicological insights, I‘m afraid! That is one of my favorite instances of music in a painting, however 2w

Fascinating and enjoyable are not how I would have described reading this. I‘ve had this on my tbr since 2016, I‘ve always imagined this to be a difficult read, but instead it was the complete opposite, and what a read!!! I didn‘t grasp everything but I was okay with this as I intend to read this several more times more whilst trying to get more familiar with global ancient history.

I'm almost half way through. There are no ghosts or witches in this one, but the thought of reading it has always been a scary thought. 🎃🎃

This has been on my tbr for ages, and finally reading it. Not exactly Halloween read but the thought of wanting to read it was scary enough. 😃

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A beautiful work that results in provoking deep thought about the ideas that drove societies, key historical figures, and governments through time. Herman invites the reader to take stock of what ideas and world views are driving your daily decisions."

If you find philosophy boring I encourage you to read about Peter Abelard's steamy love affair and the tragic conclusion. It's pretty wild. #nonfiction #history #philosophy

This was surely original food-for-thought, and out of my comfort zone. I want to read more by this author for sure.
