Fear in the Sunlight | Nicola Upson

Pickpick

Stumbled across this 4th volume in Upson‘s series featuring Josephine Tey (!) and her posse as she plays detective in the golden years between world wars. Little catty throwaway lines on Dorothy Sayers and other writers, star studded IRL cameos, and meticulously researched crimes that inspire Tey‘s cases got me started binge reading all 10 books. Can be uneven but what kept me going was the totally #queerlitsy soap that‘s her love life throughout

Tonton that‘s a current running through the whole series. Plus special guest in the 10th book (my first girl crush) in photo! 2y

So much pent up grief, inarticulate stubbornness, lack of self worth, identity, and inability to see what‘s right and obvious in front of Jess, whose only skill is taxidermy the way her father taught her. I felt like shaking her at times, but that just means the writer is making you care. Always Daddy‘s girl she can‘t forgive his suicide, yet keeps his memory close in desperately trying to keep his business afloat. She‘s a craftswoman who can‘t ..

Tonton admit her mother‘s creativity and artistic vision; who essentially drives away any chance for love. Tiny epiphanies and growth until there‘s a glimmer of change, hope, and happiness. Got under my skin. About time to bust out of your shell, girl! #queerlitsy 5y

Pickpick

Anna May Wong was always given exotic roles, and kept up the struggle to play a leading role-close to impossible and the devastation when the lead role in Pearl Buck‘s The Good Earth was given to a white actress. She was rumored to be in a relationship with Dietrich and this book springboards off that#queerlitsy. Sigh. Though Dietrich was a goddess, checkout the pair in Shanghai Express. Wong was the better actress. 🔥🔥🔥Yep, I‘m stanning!

Loved the idea that the US government used Dr. Zhivago as a Cold War weapon (yes, a book can help change the world); story told through three women: Pasternak‘s muse, the two spies, and a Greek chorus of Washington DC secretarial pool. A touch of Carol as well #queerlitsy. The ‘50‘s patriarchy norms, true but infuriating; one particularly loathsome idiot gets his just desserts, though. Morality, patriotism, betrayal, love, sacrifices for art:🌟🌟
