La douleur | Marguerite Duras
post image
Pickpick

This a painful and emotional read. Fear, pain, avoidance, faith, hope all gathered into this 50 pages of writing. Duras. 40 years after the prisoners, deported and soldiers arrive in Paris as Berlin burns is blunt but poignant. Luminous with black holes of despair. Sentences where the best of people is overshadowed by the worst, by indifference and the will to move on and forget. #readinginFrenchJuly

Happening | Annie Ernaux

Pickpick

A poignant, matter of fact memoir of Ernaux's illegal abortion in the 1964 France. It is chilling, yet completely riveting. A glimpse at a time not far away where women had few choices, a terrifying view of what might be again or is for women.

This is book one. I enjoyed it but wasn't head over heels about it. I'll read book 2 eventually.
I liked the lives and minutia of the narrative Elena gives us. But it's slow and violent and depressing storytelling.

Suet624 I agree. 5y
xicanti I felt the same way, then was completely shocked by how much I loved the next two. 5y

This mystery is pretty good. I'm pass the 40% mark. Tour scenery... Bourgogne has really, really pretty castles, with moats...
Sagan keeps his green jersey, finishing third.

Stage 6... 7 hills to conquer. My current book fits a square on my library bingo card and I did not expect it. 😁

Stage 4 is for the sprinters. I'm gonna be done with the Nothomb tonight. It's an average one so far.

My yearly Nothomb. It will also fit in the read harder challenge. Stage 3, a few hills, a sprint and a long, long road. Sagan still has the green jersey. #readinginfrenchjuly #tourdefrancereading

Quand sort la recluse | Fred Vargas

Pickpick

I wanted to take my time reading this, the last new Vargas I can read, before the new one comes out. I failed. I dived and only came back up after there were no more pages. Vintage Adamsberg. The plot is less gruesome than the last one. 3 deaths by spider‘s bite. This strange news takes hold of Adamsberg and, we, the reader are taken on a ride. Vargas mixes as always science, superstition and instinct. Loved it. #readinginfrenchjuly
