Well, today's final decision was a nailbiter & many of the brief judgments were again thoughtful considerations of Vanishing Half & Interior Chinatown (with the exception of judge Sean Hooks 🙄). My 3 favorites were knocked out pretty early on & I would have liked to see another book get the Rooster since Yu won NBA, but IC was ranked as my #5 pick. The entire process, from reading the list to voting & discussing has been a blast! #tob21🐓

vivastory This comment from RidgewayGirl “I take back my defense of Sean Hooks's judging skills. I'd thought him sincere, if overly weighted down with the need to adopt a bro-ish tone. This turns out to have been overly generous on my part. I'm not a good judge of judges, it turns out. I take it all back.“ 😂 3y
MicheleinPhilly I haven‘t read it yet. Is it as bad as that judge last year or the year before that was basically like, “These books are stupid. I‘m out.” 3y
vivastory @MicheleinPhilly I didn't read that judge, but basically. He'd judged 2 different books early on (DKK & Memorial) & was an ass then too 3y

Liz_M @vivastory: I “know“ @RidgewayGirl from LibraryThing, but she also occasionally posts on Litsy. 😊 3y
vivastory @Liz_M I thought the name sounded familiar! 😂 3y
Flaneurette About the only good thing about that judgment by Hooks was that it inspired a lot of good discussion by the commentariat, but there was * so much * good stuff this year. He was an ungenerous, gate keeping snob that didn‘t judge the books on their own merits/ intention but some rarified ideal. Sad the tob is over 😞 3y
vivastory @Flaneurette Exactly! The way he *criticized* the books was not helpful at all. Two of the books that he “judged“ I didn't particularly care for: Deacon King Kong & Vanishing Half. But there are specific reasons why neither one worked for me. Plus, both of them had their strengths. Instead he just kept writing snide comments (ie how none of the tob list will be remembered in 100 years.) Give me a break! 3y
BarbaraBB Yeah @RidgewayGirl nailed it! 3y
RidgewayGirl Judge Hooks certainly knows how to grab the spotlight! And to whoever created this homage to John Cho, Thank you. 3y
vivastory @RidgewayGirl He really does! They're from a campaign a few years ago #starringjohncho Seemed appropriate for the book 3y

Pickpick

Willis Wu AKA Generic Asian Man aspires towards the ultimate fame allowed him, that of Kung Fu Guy. Wu occasionally appears on a procedural cop show, with CSI style puns, entitled Black & White. In fact Yu's book is formatted in the font of a screenplay & large sections of the book are dialogue, but it's undoubtedly very much still a novel. Thankfully, as anyone who has had to read a screenplay will attest to.

vivastory Was this the best novel I read this year? No, but it is innovative, lively & full of humor. There is a genuine sense of the Asian American community at the heart of the story & I think it was a sound decision to award this the NBA for Fiction. Photoshopped posters from the 2016 campaign #starringjohncho to raise awareness of the lack of Asian American representation in Hollywood. 3y
Hooked_on_books I found this book wildly creative. I agree it wasn‘t my best of the year, but so worthy of being elevated to a broader audience. 3y
BarbaraBB Great review as ever. A book of which I feel the need to read it. 3y
Theaelizabet Glad to hear you liked it. Reading it soon. 3y

American Born Chinese | Gene Luen Yang

I've been annoyed lately. From Scar Jo to Emma Stone, a lot of Asians are being white washed in Hollywood. So reading American Born Chinese again and really looking to support my community into having more conversations about how we're portrayed and fighting for better representation.

jennwangster Gene is my good friend's brother-in-law! 😎 He's a great person! 8y
whitney @jennwangster Tell him he can come to the Strand /wheneverrrr/ he wants. Such a big fan! 8y
angrylilasian Yes! I'm loving the #starringjohncho and #starringconstancewu trend. And all of Gene's books are must reads. 8y
RichRennicks That's a fab book. Got to meet him at BEA, but haven't had a moment to read his new one. My daughter loved it though. 8y
thewanderingbookmark Love this. It spurred me onto reading Boxers & Saints and The Shadow Hero—Yang and Liew are awesome. 8y
