The 3rd of this trilogy finds Hervey married to Nicholas but about to have a serious operation. The bk then covers the 9 days of the 1926 general strike, + the characters are polarised btwn avid support of the cause + entrenched self-interest. What is interesting is how scared of revolution society was at a time when ww1 still impacts on lives + poverty is rife. A fascinating period, + good series. And the life of the writer is wortha bk itself ⬇️

andrew61 Just a mention of the choices virago made for the art on their covers . Here 3 wonderful Edward Hopper images captured the dark emotion of the characters. 1w

August #bookspin

An informative novel in verse about a young girl and her migrant farming family during the Delano grape strike lead by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. Well done.

Novel in verse: HF based on the birth of farm workers unions in 1965, at the grape harvests in Delano, CA. The Filipino families started a strike demanding higher pay, fair breaks to cool off, safe working conditions, and equal rights for female workers & children, among other things (illnesses/death from pesticide spraying). Cesar Chavez joined the fight, and soon after, Dolores Huerta. It was no picnic.

Putting “Cujo” on the back burner for a while. I want to finish Emile Zola‘s Rougon-Macquart series. “Germinal”. #Ètienne_Lantier #miners #exploitation #outrage #strike

Memphis, Martin and the Mountain top is a HF, PB which would be perfect for a RA during black history month. This book explores the assassination of MLK and the experience as emotions that go along with going on the sanitation strike in Memphis through the eyes of a 9 year old girl. This book is a Coretta Scott King award winner in 2019. Alicefayeduncan.com provides a great teacher resource for discussion questions before and after you read.

Tabitha_H #UCFLAE3414SP20 The UDL principle I would use would be 3.1, activate and supply background knowledge. The ESOL strategy would be #15, reinforce the key ideas you present again and again. (edited) 4y
DrSpalding There are several Coretta Scott King winners that would work well with this book in a social studies unit, as you mentioned during Black history month or when you were teaching students about historically significant individuals. 4y

This is another book I would definitely use in my classroom. I would read it to my students to let them know it is okay to stand up for what you believe in and it is okay to be different and out there. It is a good book to show the kids to believe in themselves to stand up for their rights and to do the best thing.
