(1976) Second in Smith's "Annwn" series set on a steampunk parallel Earth. In this one, H.G. Wells's Martians have regrouped and plan a second invasion -- this time against Annwn for reasons that aren't entirely clear. In fact, little makes sense about this seat-of-the-pants plot, which pits heroes from book one plus Sherlock Holmes & Watson against nihilistic theosophists and Martians. It's bonkers as it sounds, but also fun.

Equal parts amazing (the attack on New York) and silly (the lead character's absurd "mission" and how it ultimately plays out). I never would've given it a chance if I hadn't stumbled across the hardcover at the Dollar Tree(!), and while I'm not sorry I read it I certainly won't seek out Baxter's other Wells sequel (to The Time Machine). Worth a look for the curious, but I found it entirely too uneven. #sciencefiction

6/150 This was not what I expected, which was a retelling of The War of The Worlds. Instead it's a dive into various parts of H.G. Wells fictional worlds. Yes we get invading Martians, but also Dr Moreau (from The Island of..), Hawley Griffin (The Invisible Man), Dr Cavor and the cavorite sphere (The First Men In The Moon), the Selenites (also from First Men) and even the giant rats from The Food of the Gods.

RamsFan1963 It was an amusing, some times silly and unscientific, adventure, mixing real historical figures like T.H. Huxley, Percival Lowell and H.G. Well with his fictional creations. 2y
Lizpixie Sounds right up my alley! 2y
braddsibbersen I'm all for anything that references Food of the Gods. And yes that includes the 1970s film adaptation. 2y

I loved teaching about the radio broadcast of War of the Worlds when teaching the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression. The fact that the broadcast was so well done that listeners could not tell it was a performance rather than fact demonstrates the persuasive power of information platforms. This account details the origin of the broadcast screenplay, the input of the actors and those involved, and the effect the broadcast had on listeners.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.
