W/ the entire family on vacation in Scotland, Peter was just hoping for some relaxing time on the beach. Then a maybe selkie is found dead, a mysterious panther is stalking sheep, & Abigail gets a crush. So business as usual.

Lots of fun, great humor, & fascinating world building, it feel like we skipped a book w/ the time jump. & there were just too many characters that felt incidental. & I did not get invested in Abigail‘s romance. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

I reread my (2nd hand) H. P. books, because I needed something familiar and comforting to accompany me through tough times. As much as I like the stories and some of the characters, I can only leave a negative review - not because of the plot holes/mistakes, but because I can't understand how someone can write characters/relationships like these and go on to spread so much hate, in a way that would make Voldemort proud. JKR deserves no support.

So much more going on in here than I remembered!
Nutt, firstly his entire existence, but also his actual identity.
How difficult it is to recognize your own worth, especially when fighting internalized and systematized prejudice, how you were raised as much as how people react to you in the present. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Glenda and Juliet and recognizing the true breadth of their horizons, the oppressive nature of not just the social hierarchy, but members of your own 'social class' expecting for the sake of respectability you'll know your place or they'll remind you of it.
Trev, the weight of a legacy, the dangers and pressures faced by athletes, the expectations when growing up with a certain crowd.
2w
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Pepe and Madame Sharn both being compassionate AND every kind of louche badass, challenging all kinds of societal preconceptions. Tack Professor Bengo Macarona onto this pair for a number of reasons...😏 There's a couple throwaway lines, descriptors, around Macarona that I'm not sure would be used/phrased the same way in 2025 as they were in 2009, I'm hoping they didn't end up causing offense but it feels possible. 😬 2w
Robotswithpersonality 4/? We've also got:
-the importance of kindness, of having your efforts recognized rather than taken for granted.
-the fluctuating fortunes of sport and it's connections to fandom and mob mentality, emphasized by fantastical elements
-Bullies, their nature, their perils and their disposal
-Academic rivalry and the layers of ridiculousness and chaos available when the opponents are also wizards
2w
Robotswithpersonality 5/5
-and about 7/8ths into the book, a damn good game of soccer(football)

Nightmare. Mustrum Ridcully is an information manager's nightmare. 🫣🫩

julesG Guilty of being a fan of the floor heap method. But it's more heaps of unread books and unfiled (but taken care of) documents on a sideboard than the floor. Need to be more Ponder, less Ridcully. 2w
julesG Also, love what autocorrect made of Ridcully's name. 2w
Robotswithpersonality @julesG See there's organized chaos, which I can get on board with, and then there's Ridcully. 🤦🏼‍♂️I aspire to Ponder, but there's no way I'd hold that many positions successfully given my zero chill baseline. 😅 2w

Another reread/listen of this first book! My husband is not a huge reader but loved this series as a kid, so I convinced him to start the audiobook with me on a road trip. He really enjoyed it! Of course I couldn‘t wait for our next road trip to finish it (and him needing us to listen on 1x normal speed was killing me), so I listened to the rest on my own. Still holds up!

Another amazing installment from the Dresden files. This one was nonstop action, even for Harry Dresden. I also loved the new crop of side characters, who I hope will be recurring. Can‘t wait to pick up the next one!

Rivers of London books read so fast, which is a nice change before diving back into medieval gender.
I enjoyed this one despite the comparative dearth of local history (there was still some), I had missed Peter's sense of humor. Still a little formulaic, and I feel like too little work was put into the twins.

annamatopoetry Also, I get the vibe that Aaronovitch chose to make Abigail queer because he doesn't know how to write characters who aren't into women (or who are into men? See the kim book, which had no chemistry), and she feels very Peter 2.0 4w
