Bailedbailed

Bailing on books is always a tough thing to do, especially when so many accolades and hype surround them, but the main character in this one was unlikeable simply because she was boring. Relating to her personality and views was too difficult considering all of the resources and opportunities she had, and that this tale has been told before in a more intriguing way. Gave up around page 100.

Started this one tonight. Only on Chapter 2, but thinking it‘s a modern adaptation of Rear Window.

allureofbeauty Basically is. But rear window is better lol 1mo
Ava_Black @allureofbeauty Yeah, about 40 pages in and not digging the main character too much anymore. Something about her complaining so much but being so privileged. And feel like the plot could be moving quicker. 1mo

Yes, the narrative is beautiful. Yes, the settings are captivating. But there was no plot. So many things bothered me about this book...how the author romanticized rural poverty, how she asked the reader to endure dozens of pages describing nature, how the stereotypical dialog never matched the narrative, how all characters seemed devoid of emotion/reactions. Got to pg 70 before I decided I wanted to throw darts at it and gave up.

SamAnne Oh good! Someone else who didn't like it. I liked the nature descriptions but found the character unbelievable and also agree about the romanticizing of poverty. (edited) 1mo
Ava_Black @SamAnne Yeah, I was actually afraid to say I didn‘t like it because readers adore this book. The narrative and poetry in it are gorgeous, but the dialog is so stereotypical and a complete mismatch with the narrative, that it made me feel like a rich person was narrating the horrible life of a child in poverty. The whole thing felt droning and pretentious and I very much struggled to find a plot. This felt like an author‘s musings, not a story. 1mo
Fairyvixen Thank goodness , someone agrees with me. Thought I was so alone in loathing this book. Made no sense to me whatsoever, completely unbelievable situations and plot. Had to read it for a book group. So much in it just didn‘t make any sense at all, utter rubbish 2w
Ava_Black @Fairyvixen It seemed like the author just wanted to write but didn‘t necessarily want to write a fiction novel, as if plot and characters and dialog were unimportant, that literary rhythm and sound trumped all. Maybe easy and fun to write, but mot good to read. 2w

Engaging characters who show emotional depth led me through dark, twisty plots with unexpected endings. Two stories that stuck out were Ricky Don‘t Lose That Number and The Girl Could Be So cruel because the male characters showed fragility and vulnerability regarding their powerlessness against feminine wiles. Great to read such bold writing which exemplified a male character‘s emotional weakness in a genre fraught with machismo.

Engaging and well-written, this medical thriller weaves threads of sex, greed, and murder together to create a complex tale of well-developed characters with incredible expertise who use their skills to unravel the mysterious death of a beautiful, but dangerous socialite. At 316 pages, this read takes a bit longer than most, but every page is valuable. Not a light read, but not disappointed.

One of my favorite authors, Mike McCrary, just dropped a new short story, Mad As Hell. It has the same flavor and tone as his novels. Consistently, I can rely on this author for a fast-paced, emotionally rich, morally questionable, read.

The book I tagged in this post, because Mad As Hell wasn‘t available, is a super novel if you like noir and grit. Sometimes hard to read, but never dull. Never boring.

Trying something different tonight. A medical thriller. So far, the writer‘s knowledge of content (he‘s a doctor) is giving the story a great, authentic feel. And I love that it‘s set in the Midwest (Minneapolis).

Crashed my car in the McDonald's parking lot and met this guy, who turned out to be a hard-core crime/legal-thriller aficionado with hundreds of books in his collection! When he fixed the Suburban, he researched THE BUG JAR, then requested a signed copy. Here he is, getting it! Readers are incredible!

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled That‘s fantastic! 😁 1y

Ah! The sales associates at the romance boutique are reading THE BUG JAR! Turns out they're huge book nerds who are in book clubs and love to read about political/sex scandals! Yay for books! Yay for reading!

Jennifer Hillier never disappoints and this book is no exception. She took a different approach to this novel by including character types who aren't normally what she writes, but it worked. Sufficiently creepy and weird, this is a good read for a dark and chilly autumn night.

RaimeyGallant Sounds fun. Would if I lived there. 1y
KatieCarpenter Oh for cool! 1y
Ava_Black @RaimeyGallant Really? I'm glad you said that because I'm still trying to figure out Litsy (was a Goodreads girl, but this is so much easier!) and not really sure if I should be promoting my own book on here! I don't want to get kicked off because I've found a goldmine of stuff to read, and like reading people's conversations and reviews, but don't want to overwhelm anyone with event updates and promos. Thanks for giving me that feedback! ❤ (edited) 1y

Ava_Black @KatieCarpenter How flattering that you think so! I'm hoping you can make it so there will be a familiar, or cyber-familiar at least, friendly face in the audience 🙂. Have an event booked in LaCrosse, too and working on events in Green Bay, Milwaukee, Madison, Chicago, and that almighty New York! 1y
RaimeyGallant There are other authors on here. Maybe observe what they do and try to find what balance of self promo works for you? 1y
Ava_Black @RaimeyGallant Thank you so much for that idea! Because I follow my fave authors on FB and Twitter, never thought to follow them here! Just thought about this for finding new books. Will do this. Thanks so much! ❤️ 1y
