....future generations will not know, will not even guess, the true nature of poverty, which is the longest heritage of man. Shouldn‘t this be preserved somehow, like an old colonial building, shouldn‘t abject poverty be preserved as historical evidence? That is what socialists are trying to do in this country. Everybody misunderstands their intentions. They are noble conservationists, working hard to preserve a way of the world. P71

Ousep looked carefully at the priest. A fifty year old virgin, a fully grown man in a white gown who believed that he was an elf who connected god to man, this clown thought Unni was strange.

Pickpick

This book is one of the most impactful things I've read in years. I can't discount the particular connection I felt to the book due to it being based in my hometown (Milwaukee) but as the author states, similar stories can easily be found all over the country. More than anything I ever read, this book makes it clear that getting out of poverty isn't as simple as working harder and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. The problems are systemic.

And so a new Agatha Christie fan is born! Really enjoyed this (Dan Stevens is an excellent audiobook narrator- who knew?) and look forward to reading more of Christie's work in the future!

Mehso-so

I have no idea why this short little book took me so long to read- but I definitely think it affected how much I enjoyed it. Writing was good- idea creative- I just didn't love it. I can think of lots of folks to recommend this to though and think stories detailing the life and perspective of refugees are incredibly important and relevant in today's world.
