Braided brotherhood, the importance of family, and the crucial responsibility to take care of each other without measure is exemplified in this intriguing novel. Oh yeah, and there's some art in there too. 😉

In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse | Joseph Marshall III

I look forward to sharing this with my middle schoolers. As I toured the Crazy Horse Memorial and surrounding areas this week, several Lakota people told stories that jive with this book. I admire Marshall's way of making the past impact a present coming-of-age situation.

Loved reading this in the Global Read Aloud last year. The double narrative builds the story up well for reluctant and avid listeners alike.

The Sisters Brothers | Patrick DeWitt

Charlie and Eli Sisters aren't the sons that make you proud. However, the dark and violent frontier world they exist in is full of antics and situations that will make you gasp in horror and laugh guiltily. Well written novel--reminds me a bit of Steinbeck.

The Serpent King | Jeff Zentner

I feel like this book was written specifically for me. Zentner presents honest characters who persevere, try to find their way in life, and wrestle with so much. I admire his ability to create a story with so many delicate situations that is truly believable.

I love this resource!! Kids can easily access the ideas and use the skills in each lesson. As a teacher, I can be MUCH more specific now when "more details" are needed.

When Zachary Beaver Came to Town | Kimberly Willis Holt

This unique story made me very uncomfortable. Ultimately, in a good way. The weaknesses each character has, and how they get through that summer together, left me thinking about my own personal weaknesses. Good summer read!

You will root for Ada page after page! I read this straight through, and was constantly impressed with the raw actions and emotion. Definitely suggesting it to my middle schoolers and adult friends alike!
