Jimmy McClean is a Lakota boy though you wouldn t guess it by his name: his father is part white and part Lakota, and his mother is Lakota. When he embarks on a journey with his grandfather, Nyles High Eagle, he learns more and more about his Lakota heritage in particular, the story of Crazy Horse, one of the most important figures in Lakota and American history. Drawing references and inspiration from the oral stories of the Lakota tradition, celebrated author Joseph Marshall III juxtaposes the contemporary story of Jimmy with an insider s perspective on the life of Tasunke Witko, better known as Crazy Horse (c. 1840 1877). The book follows the heroic deeds of the Lakota leader who took up arms against the US federal government to fight against encroachments on the territories and way of life of the Lakota people, including leading a war party to victory at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Along with Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse was the last of the Lakota to surrender his people to the US army. Through his grandfather s tales about the famous warrior, Jimmy learns more about his Lakota heritage and, ultimately, himself.

A young man learns about his Lakota heritage from his grandfather‘s storytelling, and by traveling with him to the lands where Crazy Horse grew up, and later defended his people in the Battle of Little Bighorn in Montana. Well done, Mr. Marshall!

I love the way this biography of Crazy Horse is told, by a Lakota grandfather sharing the stories with his grandson as they travel the lands where the events happened. Through the stories he imparts lessons about courage, context, family, and responsibility, as well as a people's connection to a land and a way if life that is in many ways outside of their reach because of the policies and practices of the United States.

This book can provide discussions for the treatment of Native Americans during this time period, as well as a discussion of being respectful of everyone's cultural background.

“In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse“ by Joesph Marshall III, 2015. Realistic Fiction chapter book. This book follows Jimmy McClean, a boy who is the ancestor of Crazy Horse, an important figure in Lakota and American History. Jimmy's made fun of for being a quarter white. To remind him of his Lakota roots, Jimmy's grandpa shares Crazy Horse's story. This book is historically accurate and a fun read for children!

“So them boys teasing you again?“ Grandpa asked suddenly. Jimmy nodded. “Yeah,“ he said softly. “Well,“ drawled Grandpa Nyles, a blade of grass between his teeth, “what's their main problem?“ “I don't know.“ Jimmy shrugged. “They say I'm not Lakota.“

I like how this book takes both fiction and non-fiction to tell the story. It makes it enjoyable to read with a twist.

This book tells the story of Jimmy McClean, a Lakota boy, who embarks on a journey with his grandfather. His grandfather tells him the story of Crazy Horse, one of the most important figures in Lakota, and American history. Jimmy learns about his Lakota heritage and ultimately, himself. This would be a great book for kids to read when they are still trying to figure out themselves, who they are, and who they want to be.

Over the summer he goes on a road trip with his grandfather and is told a very important Lakota story. The story of Crazy Horse. Crazy Horse was the last of his people to surrender to the US Army. A young adult novel that captures the life of Crazy Horse through a grandfather telling stories to his grandson. I learned so much from this book!

Re-memberProgramManager @Chrissyreadit I would have contacted you directly but I lost your info. I work 6 days a week, 16 hours a day so I can‘t always keep up with everything! I have responded to some questions that I received but I don‘t see anything recent. Maybe I am overlooking something? 7y
Chrissyreadit No- did you receive any packages of books? 7y

Focusing on a young Lakota boy learning about Crazy Horse while on a trip with his grandfather, this book melds fiction with nonfiction in a way that's accessible to middle grade readers.

I look forward to sharing this with my middle schoolers. As I toured the Crazy Horse Memorial and surrounding areas this week, several Lakota people told stories that jive with this book. I admire Marshall's way of making the past impact a present coming-of-age situation.

It's already time to choose summer reading books 😅Any other ideas or opinions on any of these titles? I'll probably be choosing two per grade level.

Jimmy (the part Lakota, part Caucasian protagonist of this 1/2 fiction, 1/2 nonfiction book) is teased. To teach him to be proud of his identity, his grandpa takes him on a road trip following the life of Crazy Horse (who was once teased & called "Light Hair").

The dialogue is awful. In ~100 pages, Jimmy says "For reals?" 5 times! It's basically a catchphrase (like "How rude!"). I liked learning the history but couldn't look past the writing.

Two chapters in and it is a captivating read, especially for people who enjoy history mixed with realistic fiction. It's about a young Lakota boy who retraces the steps of Crazy Steps one summer with his grandfather. It is more about the life of Crazy Horse than the boy protagonist.

Jimmy, a Lakota boy, is often teased for his light hair and eyes. To connect with his ancestral history, Jimmy's grandfather takes him on a journey spanning four states and retracing the life of Crazy Horse, an esteemed Lakota warrior.
This was a fantastic read, and winner of the 2016 American Indian Youth Literature award. Great for older grade schoolers and middle schoolers.

Teachers, you need to read this and put it in your classrooms. Jimmy is struggling with two boys at school who tease him because his blue eyes and light-brown hair don't look Lakota. So when school ends, his grandfather takes him on a road trip to visit locations in the life of Crazy Horse.
