This is a long narrative of the life of the Quaker Drinker family living in Philadelphia during the late 1700s and early 1800s. I enjoyed learning about the intimate day to day details of everyday life, yet there was a lot of repetition. The author did a great job explaining what life was like from a woman‘s and man‘s perspective. This book is candy for a history buff.

This was recommended by Mt. Vernon as a suggested reading. This true story is very interesting and could be made into a movie. It is an important story which needs to be told for people to understand our history, and to understand what it was like to live during this pre-Civil War time. This book really challenges us to think and look at historical figures in new ways.

It started off a little predictable, but then transformed into real heartfelt stories about the lives of 4 woman who came to the US after world war 2 to meet their fiancé/husbands. Their stories were moving and I felt strong emotions for the characters. It made me appreciative of the many comforts I have today. The women were inspirational as they endured many hardships. Every reader can relate to some of the trials of life found in their stories.

A friend loaned me the book and said I know what you‘ll say.... hmm... the story was interesting but hard to believe, predictable at times and slow at other times. A little cliche mixed with romantic novel also at times. The author writes well but I would like more descriptive language, and a little more believable. It wasn‘t engaging enough for me for some reason. Even with this said, I would try another one of the author‘s books

Outstanding book! Great back stories. Just the right amount of detail! Understandable military details. Hard to put down. A story that needed to be told about those dedicated to the German resistance. Truly amazing and brave pilots and ordinary people who made a huge contribution to the war effort.

It was a good historical fiction story based on actual events. Enjoyed the story and not a predictable ending. It gave insight into the culture and gender inequality of the time. It‘s about a US secret government project taking place in a contrived community in a rural secluded location during WW2 and the intersecting lives of a few of the residents. It‘s a good read.

This is the large print edition. It was a good book that was well written and kept me engaged. The author cleverly weaves 3 stories together to build a Nazi hunter story. The characters are believable and although the reader can see where the author is heading it‘s still a good read.

The novel gave insight into the communal living that existed during slavery. It showed how family goes beyond bloodlines and color. I enjoyed that part. However the ending was a disappointment. Some of the characters could have been developed more and would have enjoyed more description. Easy read that keeps you going.

The story and the writing held my attention. It was a little contrived. It‘s a quick and easy read.

Contrived. No character development. Characters are one dimensional. Void of description. Slow to start. Formulaic. Legal mumbo jumbo gets boring. I kind of saw the ending coming which seems unbelievable. Not my kind of book.

The beginning was slow. I almost stopped reading it a few times until I saw a review here that it gets better. I think the story needed to be told. It seems incredulous. I thought the writing was hard to follow when it came to the details. It definitely gives you a feeling of wartime during WW2 in northern Italy.
