Madeline Whittier has a severe disease called SCID (severe combined immunodeficiency) meaning that she‘s extremely vulnerable outside and can get ill from even taking a breath of fresh air. She has to stay inside the filtered confines of her house at all times, but she‘s fine with that. She‘s never had many reasons to want to go outside. Then one day, she meets a boy named Olly, who moves into the house next to hers.

Ily_vuc They start talking online, and then eventually meet in person with the help of Madeline‘s nurse, Carla. As she starts to fall in love with Olly, Madeline realizes just how much she‘s been missing out on her whole life. She struggles to choose between her feelings and the need to not get attached to something she can‘t have. However, the more she tries to let it go the harder it becomes. 2y
Ily_vuc She ends up having to decide between risking her life for love and an amazing experience, or continuing to live in a restricted box.
This book is written in the first person point of view, because Madeline (the main character) tells the story. The author uses pronouns like “I” and “we”, which shows us that Madeline tells us what‘s going on from her point of view.

Ily_vuc If you enjoy reading books that deal with the meaning of life and the power of love, then this book would be a great read for you. Moreover, if you like books that have short chapters, I‘d recommend this book. 2y

Pickpick

Sam is a high school student who struggles to hide her OCD from judgemental but popular and fun friends. She struggles to keep intruding thoughts at bay while trying to seem normal like every other student. Then one day, she meets Caroline, a witty girl with a great sense of humour, who introduces Sam to Poet‘s Corner. It‘s a secret room that a group of misfits meet at.

Ily_vuc Poet‘s Corner changes Sam for the better and helps her believe that she doesn‘t need layers of makeup and a fake personality to have a good high school experience. However, even that won‘t help Sam when she finds out something she would never have imagined possible. 3y
Ily_vuc If you enjoy books that include mental health issues and everyday struggles of high school students, then this would be a good book for you.
One theme in this story is the importance of having someone to talk to. Caroline and Sue, Sam‘s psychiatrist, are always there to support Sam. They‘re the ones that help her face her fears and accept her for who she is.
