Not convinced by this one. Some interesting ideas but didn't really warm to any of the characters. Why main character chose not to see wasn't really explored, nor why she had decided to have an operation to give her sight. Also felt that it was designed to be the start of a series (although I am not sure it is) so this book had the air of an introduction than something fully formed. Finished it but not with any real enthusiasm.

Bit late to the party on this as it's a few years old - not sure when it was released in the UK. Also not entirely sure how to categorise it - not exactly fantasy or fairy tale but somewhere in between. Turn of the century New York setting a bit reminiscent of the All of a Kind Family books, which I loved as a child. Interesting idea and well told story. Delighted to learn from Litsy that a sequel is due out soon. A gentle and heart warming book.

Saw this described as a cross between Game of Thrones and Harry Potter and thought it was worth a go. Glad I did - quite a page turner. Lots of violence and a couple of sex scenes so not for the squeamish but the main character is sympathetic (rather bizarrely given she's training to be an assassin) and I really liked the way small things that happened were subsequently key to the plot. Will definitely read part 2 (Godsgrave) at some point.

I was charmed by this book. In places it was so funny that I was laughing out loud, yet in others really poignant. What do you do with your life when the battle is won - or most people think it is won? I found the characters appealing and believable, albeit that Mattie's opponent is a plot device, not fully formed. I also wondered if the book appeals to those of a certain age - not sure my daughter would enjoy it in the same way that I did.
