Wolf Hollow | Lauren Wolk

Betty's behaviors are disturbing but believable. I am looking forward to learning how this plot will unfold. Somehow I don't think there will be a simple solution. Can Betty change? I think Annabelle will become stronger, but I suspect events will become darker before the resolution of the story. I'm curious about others' thoughts about age level for book. At this point (still early), I'm thinking 5th-6th grades as youngest. #Newberyhonor2017

DrSpalding I too am disturbed by Betty the bully. I hope she can change. Stopping at Chapter 8 was a great spot. Changes are surely on the horizon. 7y

Wolf Hollow | Lauren Wolk

After first 8 chapters: I was worried at beginning that I wouldn't want to read this book. Even with some disturbing events, I am hooked. I am intrigued by the characters and engaged in the plot. While I enjoyed the fantasy of "The Girl who Drank the Moon" because of imagining the possibilities of characters and events, I feel more engaged in "Wolf Hollow", because of probability of characters and events. #Newberyhonor2017

DrSpalding I agree! I thoroughly enjoy historical fiction and reading this makes me think of Little House on the Prairie. Ms. Taylor has a diverse one room schoolhouse class. It's very interesting. I'm wondering about Toby and his role in what will occur. 7y
CherylVDM The first 8 chapters are uncomfortable to say the least. I have know people like Betty and know the damage they can cause. I'm guessing that eventually we will learn why she is the way she is. I'm not sure I'll ever have compassion for her. 7y

I truly enjoyed the book. I was teary-eyed when Glerk took Xan to the Bog. The beauty of Glerk being the Poem and the Bog - and eternal life - very moving. I love the way characters connected. I felt like I wanted a little more at end - more about Luna and her mother maybe. I kept expecting resolution related to whoever telling the story.#Newbery2017

DrSpalding I agree Karri! A little more explanation at the end would have been nice! #Newbery2017 7y

I am so glad we will finish book this next week! I have so many questions. We know there are connections among the characters. Is there are also a circular time loop? How are Luna's mother and Xan connected? Birds are important to both. And Ethyne is interesting - more to her - what role will she play? This book would make good plot study! #Newbery2017

DrSpalding I have so many questions too! It is all starting to come together but I am at a loss for how! Do you think the volcano is going to blow? 🌋 7y
KarriW There are hints about the volcano, but if it blows, it can't hurt everyone; this is a children's book. Of course, death occurs in children's lit - but we are usually left with hope. I think the volcano will take the Sorrow Eater and maybe Xan who is near death anyway, but Xan also may transform into something other than the swallow - or ...... That is the fun of this book! (edited) 7y
KarriW I read an article by Kintsch on post-diction. It is the process of comprehending / resolving all the pieces after you know the ending. I look forward to doing that! 7y
Ehoffman Post-diction, such an important process for truly understanding a text! 7y
DrSpalding I hope the volcano takes the sorrow eater! 7y

I still think all the characters will connect but not sure how; I like the process of solving this "puzzle". The use of maps is an interesting connection - and birds. I am wondering about the volcano and its hiccups and whether that will become an event. Is there a time circle (as in "When You Reach Me"? I am confused about land of giants (Fyrian) and the tiny boots that become normal size?? So many pieces of this puzzle!

DrSpalding I too honed in on the significance of the birds! On the cover, I thought they looked like paper cranes. This caused me to think about Sadako and the cranes being good luck. However when they scarred Antain my thoughts changed. 7y
CWalters This book has so many text to text connections. I wonder how many were purposeful by the author. 7y
KarriW CWalters, I keep thinking about the elaborate fantasies in "Lord of the Rings", Harry Potter, and Narnia series. It would be interesting to talk to the author. 7y

Ch 1-12 only!
I really like the way I am predicting, questioning, connecting! How will Antain and Luna connect to each other and her mother, who is in the tower? What will the elders do to Antain? Who is telling the story in chapters 1, 4, 8, 12? I am so looking forward to learning how the author weaves all of the parts together. #Newbery2017

DrSpalding That was my exact question regarding the person telling the story in those chapters. I think it is an adult and an impatient child but who? 7y
anakenn I think the adult may be Luna. :) 7y
KarriW I hope it is not Luna. I want her and Antain to be the ones who change the Elders and Protectorate. 7y
sherronkr Of course, it has to be these two innocent ones against the woirld... 7y

Ch. 11: Glerk closed his eyes. “The Poet. The Bog. The World. And me. They are all the same thing, you know.”
Ch. 12: The Beast was the Bog, and the Bog was the Beast. .... He opened his mouth and a poem came out.

Ch. 11: “Death is always sudden,” Glerk said. His eyes had begun to itch. “Even when it isn‘t.”

DrSpalding Excellent quote selections. Powerful!❤️📚 7y
twenzel That quote about death really struck me too, Karri. 7y
