I truly enjoyed the book. I was teary-eyed when Glerk took Xan to the Bog. The beauty of Glerk being the Poem and the Bog - and eternal life - very moving. I love the way characters connected. I felt like I wanted a little more at end - more about Luna and her mother maybe. I kept expecting resolution related to whoever telling the story.#Newbery2017

DrSpalding I agree Karri! A little more explanation at the end would have been nice! #Newbery2017 7y

"Ideas, after all, are dangerous." Ch. 28 How many times throughout history has this thought been the cause of
oppression??? #Newbery2017

DrSpalding So true! The Protectorate isn't protecting, it is oppressing! 7y

I too, am so happy we will finish the book this week. I am worried for Luna and everyone in the forest. Interesting that the witch is referred to as a tiger in the woods. I dislike her thirst for sorrow. Will Xan pass? Will Luna quickly learn to use her newfound magical powers? Will the elder feel guilt and play a role in saving his nephew? What will become of the sacrificial baby? Will Luna's mother find her just as the birds have? #Newbery2017

Ehoffman I know. I can't wait to see how all the threads of this story come together. Sister Ignatia needs to get what's coming to her!!! 7y
sherronkr I know.... i love when stories intersect... 7y

I am so glad we will finish book this next week! I have so many questions. We know there are connections among the characters. Is there are also a circular time loop? How are Luna's mother and Xan connected? Birds are important to both. And Ethyne is interesting - more to her - what role will she play? This book would make good plot study! #Newbery2017

DrSpalding I have so many questions too! It is all starting to come together but I am at a loss for how! Do you think the volcano is going to blow? 🌋 7y
KarriW There are hints about the volcano, but if it blows, it can't hurt everyone; this is a children's book. Of course, death occurs in children's lit - but we are usually left with hope. I think the volcano will take the Sorrow Eater and maybe Xan who is near death anyway, but Xan also may transform into something other than the swallow - or ...... That is the fun of this book! (edited) 7y
KarriW I read an article by Kintsch on post-diction. It is the process of comprehending / resolving all the pieces after you know the ending. I look forward to doing that! 7y
Ehoffman Post-diction, such an important process for truly understanding a text! 7y
DrSpalding I hope the volcano takes the sorrow eater! 7y

How many of you follow this author on Twitter? I did, but I don't... "interesting" and frequent posts. I would love to hear her speak to gain insight. I'm thinking she's probably eccentric and brilliant. #Newbery2017

LForsythe I just added her on twitter @CWalters -- which led me to perusing her website and learning that she is a former teacher. With her eloquent choice of words, she explained why she left teaching. Check it out... it will speak to you!! 😊 7y
DrSpalding I will check this out as well! 7y
Ehoffman I checked out her website! Great stuff and we all can understand why she left the profession; we fight this daily in our courses. Reading her description of the importance of reading and books reminded me of Donalyn Miller's thoughts/words in the Book Whisperer!! 7y

One more thing, I believe both the grandmother and Luna have been put through the same magical spell. The grandmother was forgetful about certain things and I believe her caregiver placed the same spell on her as she placed on Luna. I think this was for some form of protection. #Newbery2017

LForsythe @DrSpalding This makes me think about Fyrian, too.... I noted that his head hurts when he thinks about time... how is this similar or how does it connect to Luna's (lack of) memory? 7y
DrSpalding @LForsythe I think they are "connected" in some way. The pain will stop once she turns 13 and can know MAGIC again. 7y

Ch. 13-24 This quote stuck with me and has been stated many times. Do you know what it is? When he was scarred by the birds, I was distressed however it got him out of the council and into a profession he loves. The idea of it being a map is one that I too am interested in learning more about. I hope the quote doesn't apply to Antain and his new child! I am looking forward to the next 12 chapters. I have a feeling that loss will be a theme.

DrSpalding THERE IS NO CURE FOR SORROW. 7y
sherronkr Should sorrow have a cure? Honoring the loss somehow . .. 7y

I keep finding myself thinking of all of the mothers' losses from each year's Day of Sacrifice, not to mention Luna's mother who is still suffering, locked away in the tower of the Protectorate. Hoping that the mothers are one day reunited with their grown children in the Free Cities and that Luna's mother survives long enough to see her return. #Newbery2017

DrSpalding Agreed! Such a sad way to keep the citizens of the Protectorate compliant! I hope Luna sees her mom again too! Not knowing much about her, but knowing she has the crescent mark as well, I am thinking she has similar magical abilities. That being said, why doesn't she use them to find her! 7y
KarriW I wonder why more of the mothers didn't end up in the tower because of madness from grief. I like the idea that they may be reunited with children someday. 7y
sherronkr The forest rakes away, but we give them away as a society... 7y

I am really enjoying that the characters (witch, swamp monster, dragon) who are typically portrayed as villains are caring, loving and selfless. The villagers see them as dangerous and evil but the reality is so very different. ❤️#newbery2017

CherylVDM I'm wondering at what point they might discover a common foe? 7y
DrSpalding I had not thought of this! There has to be a true villain somewhere but is it already the Protectorate? 7y
sherronkr I keep seeing our fake news everwhere inn this book? How can we know whats real? 7y
