Got a good book club recommendation? Background: only American in AU book club where most women are 60+. I‘d like something they can get their hands on easily, since I don‘t always pick accessible books, and that has a hint of American slant, if possible. My prior picks were The Road from Coorain, The Help, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and The Red Tent. Like feminist themes too!
Thanks in advance!!!

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I really loved The Saturday Night Ghost Club, it‘s quite short but absolutely brilliant in how the narrative weaves together. My Nana and I both loved it. It‘s Canadian and set in a small town near Niagara Falls (so it doesn‘t quite have that American flavour you mention). It‘s fairly new - I‘d recommend checking out Trove to see what libraries hold it 2d
Librarybelle Are you able to find anything by Kent Haruf? I read Plainsong years ago for a library class - example of Midwest/Colorado America, with its complexities in a literary fiction format. Other Littens have been talking about this and Eventide lately. 2d
SamAnne An oldy but a goody: The Brothers K by David James Duncan. Story of a middle class family living near the Columbia River is Washington State. Focuses on the relationship of two brothers in a Seventh Day Adventist family, their love of baseball and the effects of the Vietnam War when one brother is sent off to fight. And it's not too much baseball, LOL. I'm not a baseball fan and loved this book. 2d

Pickpick

I just spent Christmas week in quarantine with a dysfunctional family as each of their secrets slowly unravel, their lies exposed. First Christmas book of the season. Looking forward to discussing with #bookclub next month.

“You‘re wrong... Loneliness is not about how many people you have around. It‘s about whether or not you feel connected. Whether or not you‘re able to be yourself.”

I absolutely loved this book. I loved Eleanor‘s journey to hopefully becoming completely fine. It‘s interesting I read this book as I am struggling with loneliness and depression and anxiety as well. I thank Ms. Honeyman for tackling mental illness in a novel. 5⭐️ #2019 #bookreview #fiction #bookclub #bookstagram

melissajayne And yes I have self-harmed myself when things get rough. While I haven‘t drank myself almost to death, I have punched holes in walls, I have broken things, I have overeaten, I have overspent, and most recently I have purposely bitten on my own forearm (by the way: it left a nasty bruise that is still healing). I have also contemplated suicide, the most recent time being on Sunday. (edited) 1w
melissajayne I am going to a mental health unit tomorrow (Thursday) morning to see what kind of help I can get. 1w
Libby1 @melissajayne - I really hope you find help and comfort today. ❤️ 1w
Megabooks @melissajayne I‘m really glad you‘re getting help. 15 years ago, a friend made me an appointment with her psychiatrist, and it was one of the most positive, life-changing things a friend has done for me ever. I hope you find the right help the first time, but if you don‘t, keep knocking, keep asking because you are strong enough to fight for a good life. Put your whole self into it because that‘s what it takes. 💕💕💕 Sending strength! 1w
Sace So glad you made that appointment! 👏👏👏 And Hugs ❤️ 1w
