This book is both a romance and a cautionary tale about the dangers of sacrificing parts of yourself for any reason, whether it's to fit into the narrow role that society has created for you, or simply to survive the pain that all humans must endure. It explores the difficulty of loving someone that society/family doesn't approve of, and the innumerable ways the upper classes can (and often do) abuse the lower classes. Quite an excellent book.
I was so excited to win an advanced reading copy of Finale thanks to @Goodreads and @flatironbooks. And it was such an excellent book... at least the parts of it I could read were excellent. But there were four pages like this that were missing at least half the print! I know, ARC's are not finished copies, errors can occur. I hope they found it early enough to fix it for the hardcover print run.
Yay, I won a book! I really loved Angie Sage's Septimus Heap series, and I'm looking forward to reading this. Thanks to @Goodreads and @HarperChildrens.
Guess who won a haul of great books? Me, thanks to FSG Publishers! (It's ok to be jealous. 😉)
Going to see John Cusack live after a screening of High Fidelity this weekend (doing the VIP meet-and-greet thing, too!) so I figured it was time to re-read the book.
Oh, no, how am I going to get my book away from little Iggy Imp?
OMG, you guys, look what I found at the charity book sale tonight! The Kipling book on the left is from 1956 and contains Kim, the Jungle Books, the Just-So stories, and Puck of Pook's Hill. The red book on the right is a 1948 edition of The Travels of Marco Polo. I got these two gems (plus an almost-new hardcover of The Fault in Our Stars) for $5!
Getting my science on. #StanfordThreeBooks
OMG, guys, this book was so good! (Added bonus: it's a standalone, so no waiting to find out how it ends.) #Recommendsday
I've been having a depressive episode since the beginning of January -- I've had very little energy or interest in doing the various creative things that usually keep me busy. The upside is that I've managed to get a ton of reading done so far this year. (Don't worry, though, I'm in good hands. I saw my dr. last week and he tweaked my meds again, now I'm just waiting for them to kick in.)
Haven't even started it and I already know I love it. You know, 'cuz it's Carrie! #ForeverMyPrincess
Loved it! Roshani Chokshi is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Ms. Chokshi, if you're reading this, please make your next book about Aasha! She's such a great character, she needs her own story.
Putting off my book group book for a couple more days in favor of this.
I won another book! That's the third time this year. Wish I could be so lucky at Powerball! Thanks to @penguinrandomhouse and @UnboundWorlds!
Three new books arrived today! Spaceman of Bohemia was a freebie I won thanks to @LittleBrownBooks and @bookriot (it's a real hardcover, too, not an ARC!). Then there's The Ship Beyond Time and The Natural World of Needle Felting (stacking them like this was the only way to fit them all in frame).
Yes, Tessie, I know you're happy that it's a novel about cats, but I brought it to bed so I could read it, not so you could snuggle with it.
And this is my reading companion, Tessie. I've gotten quite good at reading with one hand so I can pet her with the other.
Just finished reading this, planning to also read Rise of the Rocket Girls very soon. But I wanted to take a moment and say that if you read and liked either (or both) of those books, you should also check out The Girls of Atomic City, which is about the women who worked in and around the uranium refining labs at Oak Ridge during WWII.
Two newest acquisitions. I already have The Shepherd's Crown, but I have the American edition, which doesn't have the beautiful cover art of Paul Kidby. So I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to get the British edition. And an autographed copy of Goldenhand, acquired for me by a friend because I wasn't able to go to the book signing. Yay books!
All the book giveaways I enter week after week, and I finally won! Yay!
My book group meets in one week. The book has 485 pages. No worries! ☺
I also took advantage of the YA 2 for $20 sale at B&N to get some new fantasy titles.
I really enjoyed this book. I've long been a lover of fantasy novels, and I think it's great to be able to find fantasy from non-European cultures. Apart from a few minor continuity issues that didn't affect the plot, I thought this book was well-written. Characters could've been developed a bit more but were still pretty well-rounded. I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel which will be released later this year.
I had a bittersweet moment today: I was happy to get my copy of the newest Terry Pratchett book, but sad knowing that this might be the last one ever.
