Give, a novel | Erica Carpenter Witsell

I‘ve never read a more honest depiction of motherhood. This book grabbed me and wouldn‘t let me go. I‘m not sure I‘d have started it if I hadn‘t heard Erica speak about it at a conference. The blurb from Ron Rash was a factor, too. Whatever it takes for you, just read it.

Never Have I Ever: A Novel | Joshilyn Jackson

Great psychological thriller with Jackson‘s trademark smart humor and well-drawn characters.

I was surprised by how compelling this was for me. It‘s mostly an account of McCabe‘s FBI career. He describes the work and all of its detailed bureaucracy and methods without bogging down in minutia. His obvious love and respect for the agency give what could be a sappy read plenty of authenticity. The most salacious details are some of the least interesting. What it does best is give context to some of the sound-bite stories out there.

I Miss You When I Blink: Essays | Mary Laura Philpott

Waaay better than 99% of the genre. I will sell the heck out of this one.

Freefall: A Novel | Jessica Barry

Compelling characters, above-average plot. Couldn‘t put it down. Disclosure: I don‘t usually like thrillers, but I found this one acceptable.

Lovely overview of the nonviolence movement. The last chapter is both challenging and inspiring.

Beautiful writing about issues I care about. I look forward to Maren‘s next book. Fewer pills, please. #imnotaprudebutdamn

Lionel is one of my favorite characters ever. I wish I could insert him into other books just to shake things up.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ishmael. I can‘t say it was as revelational as I‘ve heard, but I think it certainly would have been if I‘d read it 25 years ago. It made me think hard about things I “know,” but managed to be an enjoyable read nonetheless.

I loved this protagonist and his backstory. Corporate greed, loss of youthful idealism, lots more. Thank you, Attica Locke, for proving that a great plot doesn‘t mean wooden characters and bad dialogue. I‘m not naming any names.

This little book rocked my world. Required reading for anyone who‘s read Hillbilly Elegy.

I really liked the interplay of different Southern “castes” in this book.
