This story was CRAZY and just kept getting crazier as it went. I can‘t believe they kept up the charade for so long. Part of me wonders if this would have attracted as much attention if she weren‘t a young woman, since so many tech leaders are grandiose and over-promise on what their technology can deliver. However, I can‘t believe anyone kept forging ahead imperiling patients. A compelling read/listen for sure.

I had to bail on this one. I really liked her other book Furiously Happy, but I just couldn‘t sustain enough interest in this one. It felt more like reading a blog. At least it seems her writing got better in her later book! I have a hard time not finishing books but I‘ve got too many in my TBR list (and another library loan ending soon!).

Finished this while camping! I loved it overall. I enjoyed the unique format going between her inner thoughts, recounting history and interactions, and questioning the coins. She touches on important individual and societal considerations about the role of mothers. I enjoyed following along as she thought things through.

candority I did a writing workshop with the author, and she had us ask the coins questions during an exercise. She really uses that method in her everyday life - it‘s so fascinating! 6y
Toniyesss @candority That‘s so cool! I liked that she saw them as random, but they still pushed her to examine her reactions and reframe questions in ways she may not have otherwise. I use tarot cards sometimes in much the same way - a projective tool to work through something you‘re thinking about. It was interesting to see in a book - especially the answers the coins gave to some of her more powerful questions 6y
BooksForEmpathy Where were you camping?? 6y
Toniyesss @BooksForEmpathy over by Morro Bay! Nice little spot in the hills but about 10 min from the beach. I had a random Monday off so we spent a couple days and hiked and hung out and read and played games. It was so lovely 6y

This book is really resonating with me. Some have called it navelgazing but for me it perfectly captures the inner conflict of a 30-something woman considering having a baby (aka me). I‘ve underlined about half the book saying YESSSS. For now, Miss Kitty makes the perfect reading partner. #catsoflitsy

BooksForEmpathy I loved this book. 6y

Parable of the Sower | Octavia E. Butler

I am struggling to get through this book. While on one hand I am interested in what happens to the main character, I think it‘s hitting too close to home - the bleak future of a parched Southern California with (more) exaggerated class divisions leading to rampant violence seems an all too real and not too distant possibility. The extreme violence and rape she describes are also getting to me. Anyone else have a similar experience with this book?

Toniyesss I have wanted to read Octavia Butler for some time, and I still feel invested in finding out what happens to Lauren, but thinking I may need to table this for a while. 6y
BooksForEmpathy I have only read one (Kindred) by her and I remember it being really heavy. It dealt with slavery, and while the story was captivating on many levels, for someone who feels deeply the feelings of others, it can be intense! Be good to yourself!! 6y
Toniyesss @BooksForEmpathy Yeah thanks. I hate not finishing books, especially this one because it‘s not bad, it‘s just too intense right now. Trying to let myself be okay with that 6y

Finished this on the way back from Reno. I love an ensemble cast audiobook! I wasn‘t sure if I‘d like this at first since it‘s not the kind of story I‘m usually drawn to, but I thoroughly@enjoyed it. I thought the characters were complex and engaging. The cast was great and really brought the story to life. 5🌟

BooksForEmpathy YES! Wasn‘t it fun!? 6y

I really liked this book! Finished listening while gardening today (forgot to take a pic and now it‘s dark). I learned so much about beavers and am convinced of their importance in our ecosystem. plus there were a lot of references to the Northwest, where I grew up, and California, where I now live. It was nicely written with an overall appreciation for nature. I‘d give it about 4.5🌟

BooksForEmpathy Have never heard of this and now thanks to you, beavers are on my radar! What‘s the coolest fact you learned about them!? 6y
Toniyesss @BooksForEmpathy I think what I took away most about beavers was how integral they are to the ecosystem, allowing other animals, fish, trees, even butterflies and the water table to flourish when they are able to build their dams. But my fave fact personally was about Peter S Ogden, for whom an elementary school in my hometown is named. I‘ve always wondered who he is and it turns out he was a trapper for the Hudson‘s Bay Co and noted asshole lol 6y

Had a moment of downtime at work so revisiting this great book. Nancy McWilliams is dropping some extremely refreshing and validating truth bombs. #workreading

BooksForEmpathy Ummm your reviews are great. I am so looking forward to being on here with you. 6y
BooksForEmpathy Also, mechanical pencils!? 😍😍😍😍😍😍. 6y
BooksForEmpathy Oh! Also, Miss Kitty should make an appearance here soon - cats and books go so well together. #catsoflitsy 6y
Toniyesss @BooksForEmpathy I‘m so glad you like them! This is probably pretty esoteric for most, but she was dropping some realness about the limitations of categorical DSM-5 diagnoses, the downsides of which are huge in my day-to-day. So it was just super validating to have someone respected put that out there, and to try to do better. I was given mechanical pencils and they great for underlining! And Miss Kitty will make an appearance soon. 😻 6y

Quick, fun read. I enjoyed the sisterly relationship - often frustrating especially for the main character but forged in early, impactful experiences that shape one for life. Not quite what I was expecting from a “serial killer” book but I liked it all the same. Plus I love a good cover

Listened to this on the way to and from LA with MY love. What a delight. They seem like two genuinely nice, talented, intelligent, hilarious people who love and respect each other and have built a wonderful and refreshingly normal relationship. I also like their takes on topics such as fashion, hobbies, and dogs. They have such great chemistry and riffed off each other constantly in the recording. A light and thoroughly enjoyable “read.”

BooksForEmpathy Have you seen them IRL!? We saw them a few years ago at the Masonic and they were so delightful!! I‘ll have to listen to this one for sure. 6y
Toniyesss @BooksForEmpathy no haven‘t seen them live! I‘m jelly! I love them though, and this was basically just the two of them in hilarious conversation 6y

Hello Litsy! My first post. I just finished this book while visiting my brother-in-law for the weekend.

4.5🌟 rounded to 5🌟 I really loved these dark stories. One in particular, told as synopses of fictionalized Law & Order SVU episodes, really stuck with me - what a unique format. Though hard to stomach at times, the constant thread of how women and our bodies are seen/treated/experienced rang true and feels important to give voice to.

Lauram Welcome to Litsy! 6y
Toniyesss @Lauram thank you! 🤗 6y
BooksForEmpathy Welcome! Yay! First post! Just seeing this. I‘m so happy you‘re here. 6y
