Bad Blood
Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup | John Carreyrou
The full inside story of the breathtaking rise and shocking collapse of Theranos, the multibillion-dollar biotech startup, by the prize-winning journalist who first broke the story and pursued it to the end, despite pressure from its charismatic CEO and threats by her lawyers. In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the female Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup "unicorn" promised to revolutionize the medical industry with a machine that would make blood testing significantly faster and easier. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes's worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. There was just one problem: The technology didn't work. A riveting story of the biggest corporate fraud since Enron, a tale of ambition and hubris set amid the bold promises of Silicon Valley.

Hooked_on_books I‘m glad she got a lot. She should have. I‘m a bit disgusted that she‘s pregnant. You know you‘ve been convicted and are going to be sentenced, so you get pregnant?!? What in the actual fuck? 2w
Aimeesue @Hooked_on_books Yes! Why would you do that to a child?? 2w
squirrelbrain I thought exactly that too Holly @Hooked_on_books - she must have planned it, thinking it would get her a more lenient sentence. 2w
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain Sadly, that conclusion simply can‘t be ignored, and it‘s just grotesque. What a tremendously selfish thing to do! 2w

Thoroughly enjoyed this! Good writing, clear and precise, and the story basically tells itself in all its horrifying details. Topped with a little morbid fascination to see footage of her (and her voice) on YouTube to complete the experience. The psychology behind her ability to string along so many powerful people is fascinating! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

What a wild ride. It is just unbelievable how long investors and the health care industry continued to nod along when basic fact checking/peer review would have revealed huge problems. Interesting, exasperating, sad and occasionally funny from the sheer audacity. At one point Holmes uses the phrase “a chemistry is performed” to describe one of the processes of her machine in in an interview, and I am still reeling.👇🏻

Mindelan All of the perspectives were a bit hard to follow in the audiobook, might be a better experience to read. TW for suicide.

This book is such an interesting but frustrating experience. It is massive red flag after massive red flag, then they check in on the date/year and you realize it will be years before it starts to fall apart.

If you‘re a McElroy fan, it is like the longest, most frustrating episode of Sawbones you can imagine (Justin not included).

Things are getting wild and I still have 4 hours left, I imagine I will be yelling in my car on the way to work 😆

Happy birthday to this little bugger. Boots turned 13 today. We adopted her when she was 1 1/2 and she‘s been one of the best parts of our lives since. She is sweet, spunky, and aggressively affectionate when she‘s hungry. I was listening to this audiobook this morning and she was so aggressively affectionate that she headbutted my headphone off. Just started watching The Dropout on Hulu and thought I would read this book. The story about Elizabeth Holmes and Thernos is fascinated and baffling. It baffles me that anyone believed her, but apparently she was very charismatic and persuasive. I feel for all the people who were misdiagnosed by her company‘s blood testing.

This book was crazy. I cannot believe the lengths she went to to cover a lie. What makes me mad is how she paved the way for women and then ruined it for all women in Silicon Valley after her. She was not the next Steve Job but she was the next Jordan Belford.

The wild story of Elizabeth Holmes and her startup company, Theranos. I was pretty familiar with the chain of events, but Carreyrou‘s investigation into Holmes‘s deception and fraud is riveting. I am completely baffled by Holmes‘s ability to lie and charm so many powerful people in her pursuit of power and money. This was especially timely as we await the verdict in Holmes‘s trial for 11 federal fraud charges.5⭐️#wintergames2021 #averymerrybingo

Well this was the wildest book I‘ve ever read and the wildest part is that it‘s all true. I haven‘t been following the trial, although I need to now. My husband does oncology research & drug development & gets frustrated by greedy & unethical companies like Theranos. He feels that this is what makes it so difficult for small companies to get funding or taken seriously (especially when coming up with novel ideas to treat diseases). It‘s just sad to

ncsufoxes Think about how many people were affected by Holmes‘ greed & incompetence. It was amazing that it took so long for her lies to final be exposed. Very well researched story that finally took down Theranos. 11mo
Smrloomis Completely agree! I thought this book was amazingly enlightening and infuriating all at the same time 🤬! 11mo
ncsufoxes @Smrloomis I think the saddest thing was the last line saying that about $1 billion dollars was lost investing in this. All I could think is how that money could have went to actual viable treatments, hospitals, researchers, social causes. I think that it makes me frustrated to think people invested money to make more but they won‘t invest in causes to help people (food insecurity, housing, education) 11mo

I had no idea the trial was going on when this title made it to the top of my TBR list. I'm emotionally invested in seeing Elizabeth be prosecuted for her narcissistic approach to business.

"Hyping your product to get funding while concealing your true progress and hoping that reality will eventually catch up to the hype..." ?

"Like her idol Steve Jobs, she emitted a reality distortion field that forced people to momentarily suspend belief."?

An excellent audiobook about good intentions gone very very wrong. A young girl wants to be an entrepreneur and develop a life-saving medical device. But fame & money got the best of her & Elizabeth Holmes became a life-destroying villain. This book exemplifies why I believe investigative journalism is critical to our lives. But for a dogged reporter & a few brave whistleblowers this lie likely would still exist, & lives lost. Highly recommended.
