Homegoing: A novel | Yaa Gyasi
post image

"We believe the one who has the power. He is the one who gets to write the story. So when you study history, you must always ask yourself, whose story am I missing? Whose voice was suppressed so that this voice could come forth? Once you have figured this out, you must find that story too."

The Birds and Other Stories | Daphne Du Maurier

Pickpick

I finally finished this wonderful collection. This was my first foray into du Maurier and I really enjoyed her style of writing. I love the way she turns the ordinary and mundane into the terrifying.

Unfortunately, I found the collection slightly inconsistent, with some of the stories being much stronger than others.

Although I didn't love every single story, I enjoyed reading them all and found every one memorable.

Wuthering Heights | Emily Bront

I loved the gothic grittiness of the story and the characters. There was also a wonderful sense of place throughout the novel.

I usually enjoy books that feature unlikeable characters, however, Wuthering Heights was a bit of a tricky read even for me.

3/5 ⭐️

Although I admire what Emily set out to do with Wuthering Heights, it was a difficult novel to enjoy and didn't grab me the way I expected and hoped that it would.

Peter and Alice | John Logan

Pickpick

Peter and Alice is a play of a fictionalised account of a real meeting between Peter Llewelyn Davis (the 'real‘ Peter Pan) and Alice Liddell Hargreaves (the 'real' Alice in Wonderland).

Peter and Alice is a fascinating and deeply affecting exploration into the price of fame.

Peter and Alice is an absolutely heartbreaking read but that makes it no less poignant and wonderful. My only wish was that I was able to have seen the play performed.

Peter Pan and Wendy | J. M. Barrie
post image
Pickpick

Peter Pan is a surprisingly adult story, although it contains magic, fairies, mermaids and pirates - things associated with children's stories.

Peter Pan reads on two levels. On the surface it is a book about adventure and magic but underneath it is a brutally honest (and occasionally sinister) story about love, loss and growing up, and a moving tribute to childhood. It reduces me to tears every time I read it.

Alice in Wonderland | Lewis Carroll

I didn't love Alice's in Wonderland as much as I had anticipated. The beginning was rather slow and the story took quite a while to get going; though there really wasn't much of a story at all.

I did love how Carroll played with language, particularly the brilliantly funny poems and rhymes that were scattered throughout the story.

I also adored John Tenniel's illustrations, every illustration complimented the story and writing perfectly.

Anna Karenina | Leo Tolstoy

I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful novel, I adored Tolstoy's fantastic writing and his effortless ability to tell a story.

I was amazed by Tolstoy's ability to create so many diverse, complex and authentic characters all of which have become quite dear to me.

I think that the key to enjoying the novel is finding the right translation for you. I strongly urge anyone intimidated by the novel to just give it a go.

Let Them Eat Chaos | Kate Tempest
post image
Pickpick

Let Them Eat Chaos tackles themes and ideas of wealth and greed, consumerism, politics, climate change, and an emerging dissociation from society.

I'm always left in awe of Tempest's writing. It's remarkable how someone so young is so wise and has such a unique, passionate and articulate voice.

This is Tempest's most powerful book so far. Although it lacks the grit of Hold Your Own, her words still hold the same power and passion.
