The Birds and Other Stories
The Birds and Other Stories | Daphne Du Maurier
44 posts | 25 read | 35 to read
How long he fought with them in the darkness he could not tell, but at last the beating of the wings about him lessened and then withdrew . . . ' A classic of alienation and horror, 'The Birds' was immortalised by Hitchcock in his celebrated film. The five other chilling stories in this collection echo a sense of dislocation and mock man's sense of dominance over the natural world. The mountain paradise of 'Monte Verit' promises immortality, but at a terrible price; a neglected wife haunts her husband in the form of an apple tree; a professional photographer steps out from behind the camera and into his subject's life; a date with a cinema usherette leads to a walk in the cemetery; and a jealous father finds a remedy when three's a crowd . . .

What do you guys think of these? I wasn‘t sure if you all would want to read any short story collections since they‘re a little longer and we‘re doing “quick reads,” so I included a few in case you guys are interested, but if not, that‘s cool too. 😊 #GroupQ #lmpbc

shadowspeak17 @JenlovesJT47 @Bookwormjillk Hey, so if you guys saw Lauren‘s email, she‘s no longer going to be able to participate in lmpbc this round. So I just wanted to see what you guys want to do. Do you want to do it just the three of us or try to find someone to fill her spot or not do the round after all? What do y‘all think? 1mo
Bookwormjillk @JenlovesJT47 @shadowspeak17 I‘d still like to do the round either with three of us or with a replacement 1mo
JenlovesJT47 I‘m cool with either option, whatever you want to do! @Bookwormjillk 1mo

As spooky as I can handle. My mother was deathly afraid of birds because she was attacked by blue jays once and because she watched the movie when she was young. I couldn't help to call Mom just now and tell her that I bought a book for her. She was not enthusiastic about the gift.

An excellent book, intricate stories, tragic characters and beautifully crafted sentences. Being a huge fan of Daphne du Maurier, I found this book only made me want to read more of her work.

“Nat listened to the tearing sound of splintering wood, and wondered how many million years of memory were stored in those little brains, behind the stabbing beaks, the piercing eyes, now giving them this instinct to destroy mankind with all the deft precision of machines.“

There's no such thing as too much of Daphne du Maurier.

I will preface this by saying that I don‘t generally have a happy track record with short stories THAT SAID the birds was brilliant, I quite enjoyed the one about the man haunted by an apple tree but I was underwhelmed by the other stories...

After watching the movie a few weeks ago (and feeling very justified for being rather wary of birds) I decided to read the short story it‘s based on AND CREEPED MYSELF RIGHT OUT (which was an A+ life decision right before bed) - it‘s completely different, character wise to the movie but just as atmospheric, creepy and horrifying...

julesG 😂😂😂 10mo
AlaMich Yeah, I read that story too and it‘s way more sinister and terrifying than the movie, imo. 10mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @AlaMich, there was a line about no smoke coming from the chimneys of any of the other cottages... which meant that everyone was dead - that little family were probably the last humans standing. I really wanted it to be a full length story. 10mo

IamIamIam I never knew it was a story!!!! Hitch was quite a fan of duMaurier, huh???? Lol, enjoy and thanks for the info!! 2y
JenlovesJT47 @IamIamIam lol yep! I love Rebecca (the movie) and still have never read it, shame on me! Have you ever read Marnie? It's not written by du Maurier but if you like Hitch's movie (one of my faves!) it is definitely worth reading. It is set in the U.K. instead of the states so it completely changes the storyline. 2y

JenlovesJT47 @IamIamIam while you're at it I would recommend reading Psycho if you haven't already! Most if not all of Hitch's movies are based on books. He actually bought up all of the copies of Psycho during filming of the movie so the ending wouldn't be spoiled. 😅 2y
IamIamIam Omigosh, I believe it! I think we have Psycho but I just haven't read it. I also got this ages ago as a gift & haven't done any more than skim it. Guess I'll have to dig it out again! 2y

IamIamIam NO!!!! My dad absolutely LOVES Truffaut so thanks for the father's day gift idea!!!! 😂 I'll have to get 2 copies!!! 2y
JenlovesJT47 @IamIamIam you're welcome! 😅 on the documentary I saw, it was hours of Truffaut interviewing Hitch, so it was very interesting! Both geniuses of their craft in their own rights imo. Can't wait to read it! 2y
Carolyn11215 I had no idea she had written The Birds. Movie scared me so much as a kid I refused to watch any other Hitchcock until I was in my late 20s/early 30s! 2y
JenlovesJT47 @Carolyn11215 The Birds is one of my favorite movies but I didn't start watching Hitchcock movies until I was in my late teens so it didn't scare me too much. But my mom said the same thing, it scared her to death and she refuses to watch it again. 😅 (edited) 2y

I finally finished this wonderful collection. This was my first foray into du Maurier and I really enjoyed her style of writing. I love the way she turns the ordinary and mundane into the terrifying.

Unfortunately, I found the collection slightly inconsistent, with some of the stories being much stronger than others.

Although I didn't love every single story, I enjoyed reading them all and found every one memorable.

I love the Alfred Hitchcock movie for The Birds so it's about dang time I read the story. I finally did last night and I loved it too! Now I have to read the rest of these short stories!
