The Birds and Other Stories
The Birds and Other Stories | Daphne Du Maurier
77 posts | 53 read | 57 to read
How long he fought with them in the darkness he could not tell, but at last the beating of the wings about him lessened and then withdrew . . . ' A classic of alienation and horror, 'The Birds' was immortalised by Hitchcock in his celebrated film. The five other chilling stories in this collection echo a sense of dislocation and mock man's sense of dominance over the natural world. The mountain paradise of 'Monte Verit' promises immortality, but at a terrible price; a neglected wife haunts her husband in the form of an apple tree; a professional photographer steps out from behind the camera and into his subject's life; a date with a cinema usherette leads to a walk in the cemetery; and a jealous father finds a remedy when three's a crowd . . .

I just read Rebecca and gave it five stars. When I learned The Birds was also by Daphne du Maurier I decided to read it in October as well. It is set in December but makes a superb spooky season read. I am not going to read the other short stories in the collection right now, back to my previously planned tbr. I have not seen the movie but understand it is very different. #scarathlon

AnnR Great! Glad you liked the story & I hope you have an opportunity to see the movie version sometime. Maybe for #Scarathlon2023? 🙂🎃 1y

Watched the classic The Birds today. I never knew it was based on a short story by Daphne Du Maurier. Did you? 🙈

vivastory I read the story last year in the tagged collection. It's even more disturbing than the movie 3y
Michael_Gee @vivastory Same! And I agree. I also didn‘t know until (l think) last year that it was based on her story. Have you heard of the 1936 novel The Birds by Frank Baker? It‘s just been republished by Valancourt and includes an introduction by a Hitchcock scholar. Apparently Baker threatened to sue, claiming the movie “borrowed” from his book. I‘m curious about his book! 3y
AmyG I have seen this movie a zillion times and I just learned this recently. 😳 3y
vivastory @GhostStories Interesting! I was completely unaware of the Baker book. I'll def have to check it out. From what I understand Hitchcock was usually pretty up front about what material he was adapting. 3y
MariaW @vivastory @GhostStories Now I have ro read both. 🙈 3y

I wish my library had the entire book available, but at least they had these two options.

The Birds was an excellent short story and I definitely want to rewatch the film now. 💚

Don't Look Now had Maurier's beautifully gothic writing style, but I didn't find myself loving it as much as previous writings.

Crazeedi Omg, I remember being scared to death when I saw this movie!!! 3y
vivastory I was telling someone last night about The Birds & how creepy the story is 3y
Addison_Reads @Crazeedi @vivastory I was walking while listening to the audiobook and if a shadow of a bird passed over I'd catch myself flinching a little. 😂 creepy stuff 3y

The Birds is one of my favorite Hitchcock movies, so of course I had to read the original short story that inspired it. I enjoyed the original story but understand why Hitch made the changes he did. As for the rest of the stories, I enjoyed all of them with the exception of the final story in the book. Still an enjoyable read and Du Maurier is quite the story teller. #AuthorAMonth #BookSpinBingo

MallenNC I need to read this. Birds make me nervous so the movie definitely scared me! I forgot it was based on a DuMaurier story. (edited) 3y
TheAromaofBooks This one is on my list for this month, too!! I've never seen the movie, so I'll be going in blind. 3y
Skygoddess1 @MallenNC I can understand that, I hate when you‘re outside minding your own business and a bird buzzes past you 3y
Skygoddess1 @TheAromaofBooks The movie and the short story are different enough that having seen the movie is not a prerequisite. 3y
MallenNC @Skygoddess1 Yes! I never minded birds until one day I was walking to my office and a bird dive-bombed me. She had a nest in a nearby tree but I hadn‘t even looked her way. Now they worry me. 😄 3y

rwmg The film was on TV the other night. Rather slower than I remembered but still terrifying 3y
Bklover @rwmg I think I want to watch the movie again soon. It‘s been ages (decades?) since I saw it. I had the same reaction to the book. Not a whole lot to the short story so I‘m curious about the movie again. All I can remember about the movie is the birds. 3y

I enjoyed reading The Birds for #AuthorAMonth even though I'm not really a fan of short stories, but I remember watching this movie years and years ago. As usual with short stories, I wanted this story to continue. I probably won't read any of the other stories in the book because, well, not a fan of short stories. 😂

Judybskt I didn‘t realize until recently that she wrote that. 🤦‍♀️ 3y
veritysalter If you do decide to pick it up again, I recommend ‘Kiss me Again, Stranger‘ as another excellent one (also made in to a film). I know short stories aren‘t for everyone, but glad you enjoyed ‘The Birds‘, I found it far more plausible and frightening than the Hitchcock version. 3y

This was an interesting short story/BBC radio drama. I definitely got the feeling the birds symbolized the trauma a lot of Brits had after the Battle of Britain. The way this was directed, the birds seemed to symbolize the continued fear of invasion. 🤷🏻‍♀️ my two cents!

My library didn‘t have much in the way of Du Maurier other than Rebecca, which had double-digit holds on all copies! Glad I was able to read this short story for #aam!

Soubhiville This is what I plan to read as well. I‘m glad you got to read it too. 😊 3y

A moment alone to cheat & start my #authoramonth for March. Such a simple 1st story but so memorable. Would‘ve been much more effective if it was about our beautiful yet feral sounding Aussie birds instead of gulls etc. I remember the 1st time I travelled overseas thinking birds really can sound like they do in the movies! Had a big day today looking after my niece Sybil,1 & nephew Ted, 3 while their mum, my sister & dad attend a wedding at Uluru.

This book collects some short stories by Daphne Du Maurier, starting with the famous “The Birds“.

I'm happy to have finally read the original, which differs from the Hitchcock movie, but in a good way. I think Hitchcock made a good call in just taking the happening and not making a whole movie out of a short stories.

The other texts were very interesting to read as well.

veritysalter I loved ‘Kiss Me Again, Stranger‘, a very different take on a serial killer story. 4y

The Birds is one of my absolute favorite movies, so I was happy to get this for the #LMPBC — in my personal opinion, all of these short stories are very well-written, with The Birds being the best. And the ending to the last story blew my mind! I‘m looking forward to reading more of her books now. 4.5⭐️

Wow, that was excellent!!! Some of the stories dragged for me, but the title story was an amazing dystopia nightmare and each story had great writing and imagery. After watching the movie a few weeks ago (and feeling very justified for being rather wary of birds) I decided to read the short story it‘s based on AND CREEPED MYSELF RIGHT OUT (which was an A+ life decision right before bed) - it‘s completely different, character wise to the movie but just as atmospheric, creepy and horrifying...

julesG 😂😂😂 5y
AlaMich Yeah, I read that story too and it‘s way more sinister and terrifying than the movie, imo. 5y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @AlaMich, there was a line about no smoke coming from the chimneys of any of the other cottages... which meant that everyone was dead - that little family were probably the last humans standing. I really wanted it to be a full length story. 5y
