Read in one sitting and fell in love with it on the first page. It‘s brilliant and left me with goosebumps! 5/5🌟
Was I very proud of myself for not buying any books recently? Yes. Did I just reward myself for that by buying four books? Maybe 😂
I loved Tempest‘s book „Hold your own“ and am very happy to finally own this one too!
"Europe is Lost" came up on my music playlist, the introductory lines about an exhausted care worker coming off a double shift seeming so fitting at the moment. It reminded me that I hadn't watched Kae's live performance of the whole poem, which I've just done on You Tube and it's superb.

She wipes her forehead with her wrist
She's just back from a double shift
Esther's a carer
doing nights
Behind her
on the kitchen wall
is a black & white picture
of swallows in flight
Her eyes are sore
her muscles ache
she cracks a beer
& swigs it
She holds it
to her thirsty lips
& necks it
till it's finished.
It's 4:18 am again.
Her brain is full
of all she's done that day
She knows
that she won't sleep a wink
before the sun
is on it's way. ⬇
We die so others can be born
We age so others can be young
The point of life is live,
Love if you can
Then pass it on.
I love Tempest's mix of Greek myth (less evident in this poem than earlier ones), literary references, rap rhymes, and politics. This one focuses on the disparate lives of neighbours, enduring the loneliness of isolation only possible in the disconnecting environment of a big city. Mixing Brexit, Trump, climate change and gentrification, she recorded the poem as a hip hop album, from which this is "Europe is Lost": https://youtu.be/QSVyyykaEOo
I see it tonight in the stains on my hands
The buildings are screaming
I can't ask for help though, nobody knows me
Hostile, worried, lonely
We move in our packs and these are the rights we were born to
Working and working so we can be all that we want
Then dancing the drudgery off

The themes of #NeuroticSociety remind me a little of Kate Tempest's Europe is Lost https://youtu.be/QSVyyykaEOo

I always thought that poetry would be too #complicated for me. I hated analysing poems in school and I never felt like I got it. Until I remembered there are other poets than the long gone, dead, white guys. Now, I am slowly figuring out which kind of poetry I like, and suddenly it's not so complicated at all 👏

Brilliant stuff.
Highly recommend watching Kate Tempest perform her poem "Let Them Eat Chaos" while following along in the book. #katetempest #letthemeatchaos #poetry
This was an incredible long poem. I followed along in the book while watching a recording of her live performance of it. What an incredible mashup of music, poetry, rap,and performance art. highly recommend -- and do the audio or video of her performing it. She adds layers of impact.
Let Them Eat Chaos tackles themes and ideas of wealth and greed, consumerism, politics, climate change, and an emerging dissociation from society.
I'm always left in awe of Tempest's writing. It's remarkable how someone so young is so wise and has such a unique, passionate and articulate voice.
This is Tempest's most powerful book so far. Although it lacks the grit of Hold Your Own, her words still hold the same power and passion.
5/5 ⭐️
Made one purchase at Shakespeare and Company in Paris. Of course I said yes to the offer of a bookshop stamp in my book. @TrishB - It's a browser's haven.
Kate Tempest's poetry is raw, hard hitting and critical in just the right way. It is beautifully written, and this new long poem deserves to be read out loud (I did). It almost feels like a song and I couldn't help swaying along to the rythm 👌
This is why I love Kate Tempest 👌

There is something rotten in the state of Denmark. Or maybe it is just raining 💦
Trying to get ready for my day with some poetry, coffee, and relaxation in my bathrobe for just a little longer

My little #poetry collection 📚 I have made a resolution to read one poetry collection a month, and so far, I am doing well! 👍

Received this one as a present from What Kamil Reads. So sweet of him to send it to me. Can't wait to pick it up in January. #poetry #picadorpoetry #katetempest
