Mehso-so

My dog and I feel very similarly about this book. Slightly skeptical but over all enjoyed it (although some of the subtleties went over the puppies head).

I loved this book until a couple hundred pages in when the plot became about the rape allegation. I felt like this book used that device because rape culture has been a huge conversation lately and not because it was integral to the book. It felt cheap.

3/5 stars

Priestdaddy: A Memoir | Patricia Lockwood
Pickpick

Growing up in an atheist/agnostic house books and language were my religion. It is through that shared spiritually that Patricia Lockwood opens a window through which I can finally view, and begin to understand, what it's like to have organized religion be a central part of your life.

I hated this book. Not only is the "advice" the age old "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" but it also goes completely against the title and he says it's about giving a lot of fucks. Oh, and there is a heavy insinuation that if you are chronically ill or disabled that it's your fault for just not working hard enough or caring enough.

It's not the book for everyone. I loved the writing and the premise but felt that the characters were unsympathetic, flat, and hard to relate to.

I fell in love with the deeply flawed characters. But I wouldn't recommend this book to most people because you have to have a particular dislike yet interest in religion and human motivation to enjoy it.

100% read this book exclusively because of the hype. I called the twist about ten pages in and spent more time yelling about how they kept telling me things instead of showing them to me.

Eh, good escapism. Otherwise skip.

This modern take on a "who done it" really just left me wanting more. I felt cheated with an interesting premise but that was all it was, the begining idea of a story. It also didn't give me any of those spine tingling feels that psychological horror is supposed to invoke (and I'm an easy target).

I found the artistic choice to be gritty for the sake of being gritty and artistic a little existing but the characters were interesting enough that I kept reading. I actually finished this one in a matter of days.

I absolutely adored this book. It dug deeply into my soul where this non-conforming, shy, awkward, outdoor loving, creature resides and comforted me that I'm not alone in my desire to live alone in the woods with my books-- it also intimately reminded me how much I love my family, friends, and pets. Basically, while the organization of the book and "plot" left a little to be desired, this book definitely ranks in my favorites of 2017.

I highly recommend skipping this one. It opens up a dozen or so plot holes in the original series. I may have woken up my neighbors screaming "it's not cannon! It can't be!"

But, then again, I resisted the new Pottermore additions as well.

A Man Called Ove: A Novel | Fredrik Backman
Pickpick

I've heard this book is supposed to be "hella depressing" but honestly, I found it refreshing. The writing style and character quirks had me literally laughing out loud. I listened to it on audio book and made excuses so I could spend time with Ove and his Cat.

Maybe I'm twisted and backwards but, for me, this book was a fresh breeze and absolutely delightful.
