Pickpick

Couldn't put this down and it's still weighing on me. Masterful, heartbreaking, and revelatory. One character insists "I am my own nation," while each generation grapples with how that can be both true and (sometimes thankfully, sometimes cripplingly) false.

Pickpick

I remember loving this book when I read it in high school, so I wanted to return to it with a fresher and wiser set of eyes -- and I wasn't disappointed. So much depth in the deceptively sparse prose, and I couldn't stop thinking about the fragile masculinity that is the backbone of Okonkwo's life.

Inaugural post honors one of the biggest accomplishments of historical writing I've ever read -- Postwar explores each European country's reaction to the postwar 1940s-90s without sacrificing depth or individual experiences. Tony Judt made 900 pages of history fresh and suspenseful, and I miss him.
