Mehso-so

My first foray into BookTok hype was…fine? A solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️ for a fast-paced and dragon-centered narrative, but predictable romance and some of the most clumsily written sex scenes I‘ve ever read knocked at least two stars off. I did buy the sequel before I was done, so am maybe being too harsh 🤷🏻‍♀️

Pickpick

Another lovely book club pick for a quadrennial event with @annamatopoetry .

Kelly Link continues to be a provocative writer, and there are many things to like in this book. I enjoyed the way intimacy of different configurations is presented. I especially loved the distinctive interiority of the characters.

It is not a perfect book, and definitely not my recommended entry to her work. But all in all, a unique and fantastic novel debut.

Tldr; it‘s too weird for a solid recommendation.

My love for Lidia Yuknavitch still stands: her vocabulary and voice and creative word usage makes my heart quicken. But I am not wholly behind this book nor would I recommend it to many, particularly sci-if fans. It took me three tries to get through this book. It is calloused and difficult, but in a compelling way.
