Having enjoyed this novel by Neil Gaiman but coming away with the same sense of dissatisfaction I've had with every other novel that's attempted to capture the essence of America in one book (or three, for John Dos Passos), I'm more convinced than ever that it's an impossibility. This country is a giant contradiction composed of an unimaginably vast and complex landscape populated by people trying to live simple lives. How do you write that?
