American Gods (Anniversary) | Neil Gaiman
Featuring an author-preferred text, Gaiman delivers a special 10th anniversary edition of his critically acclaimed bestselling classic--winner of the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and Bram Stoker awards--a brilliant synthesis of mystery, satire, sex, horror, and poetic prose (Michael Dirda, "Washington Post Book World").

I had a hard time putting this book down. I like the interplay of how the gods and people function in relation to each other. The story is fascinating and a bit scary and occasionally very, very funny, so it‘s basically exactly what I expect when I pick up a Gaiman novel. Gods from around the world are represented respectfully and you can really tell Gaiman greatly enjoys mythology. I‘d be delighted to read it again, maybe the annotated version!

#QuotsyJan20 #prison

“The best thing—in Shadow‘s opinion, perhaps the only good thing—about being in prison was a feeling of relief. The feeling that he‘d plunged as low as he could plunge and he‘d hit bottom. He didn‘t worry that the man was going to get him, because the man had got him. He was no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, because yesterday had brought it.”

Love Neil, love Shadow.🖤

Well, I‘ve finally completed one book for my #friendrecchallenge. Unfortunately, I can‘t say I enjoyed it much. I can feel my boyfriend‘s disappointment already and I haven‘t even told him yet. 😅 I wanted to like this, but I was honestly bored through most of it. The story seemed to ramble, and I never really felt invested in what was happening.

What an adventure!

I went back and forth with how many stars to give American Gods because it is lengthy and some parts were perhaps unnecessary. However, that ending secured the four star rating.

Shadow is released from prison and just as he thinks he is about to return home to his wife, he learns of her passing from a fatal car accident. His life takes a huge turn when he meets Mr. Wednesday.

Loved the aspect of the new gods vs old gods!

Brilliant. I love this thing more every time I read it. The full cast audiobook is a great experience as well, if you get the chance. I love the brutal honesty about myth and the history of the beliefs that have come down to us through the generations. Meaningful but also just one hell of a good ride.

This book makes you question morality and sin, love and forgiveness, devotion and obligation. It makes you think about what separates us from our roots and from each other. It makes you question whether the world is changing too fast and too much.

Neil Gaiman is a master story teller. Neil is also a gifted orator, and if you get a chance to listen to this audio book you get a chance to truly appreciate it, as he reads some of the book himself.

I prioritized this book on my shelf because I wanted to see the Amazon series by the same name. This book boarders on epic- god characters, road trip, mystery, more gods; the list goes on. And just when the story feels like it‘s slowing down, Gaiman reaches into whatever god pantheon he cares to to give us cool new characters and wicked little plot twists. Pretty much the genius of this book
