Richard Bassett does an amazing job of detailing what is an expansive timeframe of Austrian military history into an enjoyable read. The analysis of different factors that influenced the development of the Austrian army show why the Austrian Empire survived all the while being a multi-ethnic state. I would highly recommend for anyone student of military history to add to their list to read.
