Chains | Laurie Halse Anderson

#ucfssechains I am 10 chapters into the book currently and I am so intrigued! I love the sister relationship we get to see between Isabel and Ruth. The way Isabel is so protective over Ruth reminds me of myself and my younger siblings. I'm curious to see how the book progresses with Isabel and Ruth living with the Locktons and her relationship with Curzon.

CherylVDM The opening of the book was disturbing. I know the story takes place at the time of the Revolutionary War but just the fact that the girls were “property” and were basically transferred after the death of their owner. I enjoy the character development Ruth. 4y
lina0217 I agree! the beginning was very disturbing. I was frustrated with the way Isabel was being treated by the Lockton's and how little control she had over her own life. One specific event that made me feel really sad for Isabel was In chapter 9 when Madame says that Isabel's name is ridiculous and her new name would be Sal Lockton because “it's more suitable“. Isabel was slowly being stripped of everything that belonged to her. 4y
aahmed21 Wow, the beginning of this book was intense for me. I didn‘t know what to think. As I continued reading I was trying to put myself in Isabel‘s shoes and was thinking about if I had been going through what she was dealing with or if I was to get treated the way she was being treated and it just brought a lot of frustration and anger to me. One thing that really bothered me was the girls being their “property”. So sad! Can‘t wait to continue reading 4y
RoblesMichelle In the first chapter when Isabel went looking for answers to her mother and asked what they should do next or where to go. I really found myself emotional and it was just the beginning. I really couldn't imagine going through what they had to endure during that period in time. When the pastor told Isabel you belong to Mr.Robert now I found myself quickly becoming angry because there was nothing they could do to prove they were to be freed. (edited) 4y
viankareyes I am also on chapter 10 and definitely am curious to see how it will be for Isabel living there. I wonder if she will go back and give her friend information or will she just keep it to herself! 4y
