Either/Or | Elif Batuman

Taking my sweet time with this book. I was lucky enough to have finished The Idiot right after Either/Or came out, and I don‘t want to let go of Selin anytime soon.

There are so many amazing artistic, literary, and academic references in this series, but the one that had me jumping up and down was the Fiona Apple discourse. Apple is my greatest creative inspiration, and the fact that Selin connected with her as well… Gives me goosebumps ♥️

The Idiot | Elif Batuman

Pickpick

Batuman captures the monotony and agony of the first year of college — one of the darkest times of my life — with both dry wit and deeply poignant and philosophical prose. As an academic, I deeply appreciated Batuman‘s assumption that her readers are learned and capable of drawing their own conclusions, as opposed to many modern novelists that insult the intelligence of their audience. I cannot wait to read the next one.

Finished this like a week ago but forgot to write a review.

I couldn‘t put this one down. The weirdly-timed subject matter, the witty prose, and the commentary on life under late capitalism was both a joy and depressing to take in all at once. Candace is a deeply engaging protagonist, and the ending was hopeful. I loved it! Looking forward to more from Ma in the future.

Absolutely loving this so far. I‘ve had it on my shelf for over a year and finally remembered it. The writing is so funny, and how bizarre is the timing of the subject?

MY DARK VANESSA. | KATE ELIZABETH. RUSSELL
Pickpick

It‘s gonna take me a while to articulate how I felt reading this book. Maybe I‘ll never be able to. All I can say is thank you to the author, for putting words to the unspeakable and facing vitriol in the face of her bravery.

And to all my fellow nymphettes: I see you. I love you. You are not alone.

I was really disappointed in this book, as the self-proclaimed president of the Buffy Summers Fan Club. The book is riddled with grammatical errors and inaccuracies about the series itself. I didn‘t walk away with any newfound knowledge of how my favorite show was made. The author seemed to use his book deal as a means of self-aggrandizing and promotion for his podcast that I will never listen to. Huge bummer.
