Into Every Generation
Into Every Generation: How Buffy the Vampire Slayer Staked Our Hearts | Evan Ross Katz
6 posts | 8 read | 7 to read
The oral history and exploration of the cultural impact of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the classic, ground-breaking television show still adored by fans old and new, from pop culture critic and lifelong devotee of the show Evan Ross Katz, social media's foremost Sarah Michelle Gellar historian. Over the course of its seven-year run, Buffy the Vampire Slayer cultivated a loyal fandom and featured a strong, complex female lead, at a time when such a character was a rarity. In Into Every Generation, pop culture critic Evan Ross Katz will explore the show's history and cultural relevance through a book that is part oral history, part celebration, and part memoir of a very personal fandom that has universal resonance. Katz--with the help of the show's cast, creators, and crew--will reveal that although the show contributed to important conversations about gender, sexuality, and feminism, it was not free of internal strife and controversy. Men--both on screen and off--would taint its reputation as a feminist masterpiece, and changing networks would drastically change the show's tone and the lives of its cast. How those disruptions impact the show's production, the lives of its cast members, and, more broadly, pop culture will be examined. Katz will address these issues and more, including interviews with stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Charisma Carpenter, James Marsters, Emma Caulfield and many more, as well as conversations with celebrity Buffy fanatics and friends of the cast including Stacey Abrams, Cynthia Erivo, Lee Pace, Claire Saffitz, Tavi Gevinson, and Selma Blair. Furthermore, Into Every Generation will explore the very notion of fandom, and the ways a show like Buffy can influence not only how we see the world but how we exist within it.

There are some significant voices missing from this look at the cultural significance of Buffy (Joss Whedon -I know- David Boreanaz and Alyson Hannigan weren‘t interviewed; Alexis Denisof‘s character Wesley Wyndham-Pryce wasn‘t even mentioned!), I still enjoyed this look back at a show that has been significant in my life. Katz is definitely a fanboy and reading this made me want to do another rewatch…or write some fanfic. #nonfictionNovember

This is not what I wanted...at all. I wanted cultural criticism and oral history. I got recaps and interview snippets. As a Buffy fan, I still found enjoyed this, ish, but I wouldn't recommend it. There's much better writing about Buffy around the interwebs.

If you‘re a Buffy fan, this is a must read! It doesn‘t just take you back through the television series, but it brings about the relevance of what‘s current in news and culture. Brilliantly done!

I was really disappointed in this book, as the self-proclaimed president of the Buffy Summers Fan Club. The book is riddled with grammatical errors and inaccuracies about the series itself. I didn‘t walk away with any newfound knowledge of how my favorite show was made. The author seemed to use his book deal as a means of self-aggrandizing and promotion for his podcast that I will never listen to. Huge bummer.

Buffy is one of my favorite shows ever, so I really enjoyed this. The first part goes back through each season, including highlights as well as things that haven‘t aged as well. Then the second part goes into recent allegations against creator Whedon and how his alleged behavior has impacted many people and changed how the show is viewed. If you‘re a Buffy fan, I definitely recommend this.

monalyisha You know I‘ll read this, @Laughterhp! Thanks for the review, @Hooked_on_books ⚰️ 2y

w00t! 🎉 I never win these giveaways! And this is one I really wanted.

And it‘s technically not breaking my book-buying ban. Technically. 😆 Although now my TBR bookcase and my 2022 TBR goal that started the book-buying ban is now +1.

Yuki_Onna 😆 Congrats!!! 🥳 2y

JamieArc Congrats! I‘ve heard that your chance of winning goes up if you review your books of GR. I don‘t know how true that is, but I typically win 2-4/year. It‘s why it‘s so hard to totally leave GR for StoryGraph. 2y
