When I was young, my dad and I used to read this book together to try and help me learn Spanish (he's bilingual). It was a side-by-side English/Spanish edition, and I vividly remember him trying to gloss over a reference to a character's penis, even though it wasn't a sexual context. He really didn't want to explain what it meant and kept saying "member." My Spanish is still only passable.

vivastory Love Fuentes. Saw him at a reading in 2004. 8y
heatherspoetlife I have the same issue with Spanish. It gets better in Spanish communities but I never learned grammar and even vocabulary fades when not around Spanish speakers. 8y
readordierachel @StoredFeminism Yeah, its super hard when you don't have someone to practice with regularly. 8y

For my #booksetinSAmerica this is great tale of corruption and politics in Mexican culture. Had to read it for a class and turned out to really dig it!

Tcip Dude I am so dumb. Mexico is not in South America. Fuck that was stupid. 8y
