On the hottest Fourth of July weekend in decades, two men have come to Hopewell, Illinois, site of a long and bitter steel strike. One is a demon, a dark servant of the Void, who will use the anger and frustration of the community to achieve a terrible secret goal. The other is John Ross, a Knight of the Word, a man who, while he sleeps, lives in the hell the world will become if he fails to change its course on waking. Ross has been given the ability to see the future. But does he have the power to change it? At stake is the soul of a fourteen-year-old girl mysteriously linked to both men. And the lives of the people of Hopewell. And the future of the country. This Fourth of July, while friends and families picnic in Sinnissippi Park and fireworks explode in celebration of freedom and independence, the fate of Humanity will be decided...

chapter_fifty2017 Did you read the following trilogy beginning with armegeddons children . I absolutely loved It 😂 but didnt read this one . Although maybe l should but l dont think it could be better as armegeddons children. 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @chapter_fifty2017 Oh yes. I've read it. I'm a long time Brooks fan. I guess what made the word & void trilogy so special for me is at the time fans could only speculate about whether the story was connected to Shannara or not. We didn't know then what we know now. 😊 6y
chapter_fifty2017 That would have been an amazing unknown arc , l do love his characters although he kills them off a bit erractly some times . I liked the two black staff books that followed but still think armegeddons children is so underatted as a great fantasy , in fact l think Terry Brooks is underatted as a fantasy author. 6y

"Each small darkness breeds another. Each small incident of anger, bitterness, pettiness, and greed breeds others. A sense of futility consumes them. They feel helpless to effect even the smallest change. Their madness is of their own making, and yet they are powerless against it because they refuse to acknowledge its source. They are at war with themselves, but they do not begin to understand the nature of the battle being fought." #QuotsyOct18

“Everything that exists has a counterpart...The Word and the Void — one a creator, one a destroyer, one good, one evil...One seeks to maintain life‘s balance; the other seeks to upset it...The balance isn‘t just out there in the world around us; it‘s inside us as well. And the good that‘s the Word and the evil that‘s the Void is inside us, too...each working to gain the upper hand over the other, each working to find a way to overcome the other.”

Pickpick

Continuing my read through if Terry Brooks' series. My favorites are the Shannara series so these two prequel series are a little under what I'd love the most. This is the first book in the timeline and it's good to see where it all started. I did like this more than the bridge series between the word/void and Shannara series.

This book was really hard to get into, but once gotten into it really took off and kept me craving more. Looking forward to the next book in the series, and my challenge of reading all the Shannara books in chronological order.
