The Bus on Thursday | Shirley Barrett

Panpan

Yeah. WTF was that??🤔 It started off promising, a very aussie sarcastic humour, then it just veered hard left into batshit territory. Creepy, making me very uncomfortable batshit territory. With dashes of child abuse & skeezyness. Don‘t bother with this one, it‘s the very first Pan I‘ve given I think & it‘s well deserved. #dontbother #ineedashowernow

RachelO Sounds delightful 😳. I really wish I could mark some books with a ‘don‘t bother‘ flag, so I don‘t reconsider them later. V impressed you got through it! 2d

Next up is this new novel by Shirley Barrett. Described as The Exorcist meets Twin Peaks in a tiny Australian town, it definitely sounds interesting. Eleanor is a 31yr old teacher when she finds a lump in her breast. After chemo & a mastectomy, she‘s had enough of her unsympathetic friends & lack of prospects so she takes a job out in the middle of nowhere. But where did the old teacher vanish to & why is there a bus outside her house at midnight?

vivastory Looking forward to your review, this one has had some mixed reviews 2d

I really enjoyed this story. The 1st book in a series, it‘s like Stuart McBrides Logan McCrae series but with a touch of the supernatural. DI Tony McLean is newly promoted & swimming in open cases when he‘s ordered to a body found in a house that‘s being renovated. The body of a young girl ritually murdered 60yrs ago is found & the murder is proving to have much more recent connections to the deaths of some powerful men. Can‘t wait to get Bk2!

#NFNov I‘m sure I‘ve read/watched more than three things EDIT:yep I did! I watched all 4 episodes of this documentary today & learned a lot more about the case than I did. All everyone remembers is the crazy wife cutting off his penis, but there was so much more to the story, especially her reasons for doing it. #TIL- there was compelling evidence of his violence towards her, inc-police & medical reports & witnesses who saw bruises.

1. Marbles. I had a container full of them🧿
2. Yep. Though Elastics were big when I was in primary school.
3. I loved Looney Tunes,especially Marvin the Martian & Foghorn Leghorn.📺
4. Double Vegemite sandwiches. Yum.🥪
5. No cafeterias in aussie schools, we had canteens where you bought your lunch if you had money, which I rarely did.
6. Walked. Not far to my primary school but my high school was a 1km each way walk every day🚶🏻‍♀️

I‘m just working out my score, hang on a sec.

95 points! Not bad, I do have two bags of library books right next to me so that was a bonus. No kindle, cup or shirt though. And most of my books are blue not green, what is it with the blue covers lately? How did you do?

#ABookishQuiz #justforfun

ljuliel Great job on points ! There do seem to be certain colors that are more popular on book covers. I picked green, since it isn‘t quite as popular as blue, sometimes red, lots of black... 5d

Up next is the 1st book in a series set in Edinburgh. DI McClean is called to his first body after making Inspector. A young girl has been nailed to the floor & all her internal organs removed & put in jars. But it seems it was done at least 60yrs ago, in a ritual supposed to confer immortality on the men involved. When murders start to happen now, McClean is convinced there‘s a connection. Sounds interesting, plus it‘s Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I loved this book! Yes, it kinda lost its way a bit, but it picked it back up again & finished strong. It‘s a strange little story filled with amazing characters, like the dead billionaire Vincent Pryce, who liked wearing capes & top hats & devised the game they‘re all playing, Dex who‘s a drag queen trapped in a bankers body right down to Tuesday who has mental Rolodexes about people, only wears black & has a ghost talking in her head. Fantastic!

Bk11 in my #LibraryHaul is the first book in a new to me series. Set in Edinburgh, it starts with the discovery of a girls body, walled up in the basement of an old mansion. She had been brutally murdered, her organs removed & placed in jars sixty years ago in an attempted recreation of a ceremony to confer immortality on the men who killed her. DI McLean thinks it connects to a series of suicides & the recent murder of a businessman.

Bk10 of this weeks #LibraryHaul is another #NFNov pick. This is about the actress Hedy Lamarr, who was a lot more than just a pretty face. In 1937, Hedy Kiesler is desperate for a way out of Vienna, with her Jewish heritage it‘s only a matter of time before the Nazis realise who she is. But she‘s been listening at all those parties at her husbands castle, she has a few secrets that may help her new country. Including the fact she‘s a scientist.

The next morning everyone is found dead with Katerina the only survivor. She blames the deaths on a tormented spirit but the only one who believes her is McGrey. Of course. After finishing the Readathon, I‘m thinking a book for #NFNov is the way to go next. This is just a small #stack of some of my #NFTBR I‘ve also got a few waiting at the library for pickup. I‘m thinking of going with A Night To Remember but the Ann Rule is calling me too. This is my problem as a reader, too many choices can put me in a rut. Do any of you have the same issue? Which one are you looking forward to reading or have read and loved?

Librariana That is an excellent selection you've got there! I own and am interested in reading 2w
Librariana But gosh, I'd be very intrigued to read Ann Rule's account of her friendship/acquaintance to Ted Bundy OR the one about Jonestown! 2w
ImperfectCJ It's been a long time, but I remember loving A Night to Remember (and feeling irritated that James Cameron didn't credit it because how could he have written the screenplay for Titanic without using that book? Or so I reasoned.). 2w
See All 9 Comments
FantasyChick I really enjoyed Jonestown, though it could be a bit dry and boring at times but The Stranger Beside Me was fantastically done! You really can't beat Ann Rule when it comes to true crime 2w
ljuliel I agree completely about it being harder to read when you have too many choices . I spend more time trying yo figure out what to read than I do reading. I‘ve read the Bundy book and the Titanic ones. They were all good. I read a Jo Estonia book back after it happened but I don‘t remember the name of it. I know it wasn‘t this one since urs much newer. 2w
vivastory I second @Librariana comments. Guin's book on Bonnie and Clyde is one of my favorite nf of the year. 2w
Lizpixie @Librariana thanks for your input! I keep putting off the Ann Rule coz I bought it online & it‘s one of those pocket editions with cheap paper & horrible printing🙄 @ImperfectCJ I just finished A Night To Remember & loved it, though I felt like screaming at it in certain parts, especially when steerage passengers were stopped from getting to boats @FantasyChick that‘s what I‘ve been worried about with Jonestown, the dry bits🥱 1w
Lizpixie @ljuliel at least it‘s not just me! I think the Jonestown book came out last year, so probably not the one you read. I remember when it happened too, though I was only 7 at the time our family used to watch the 6pm news every night while eating dinner coz of my dad. Going with another thriller for Bk3 of my #MrBook1InAMillion #LitsyPartyOfOne #24B4Monday #readathon I read Thirteen by the same author for last months #Scareathlon & really liked it, so I‘m hoping for another hit. The blurb doesn‘t give much away-Before you read this know 3 things 1.The police look to charge me with murder 2.No one knows who I am or how I did it 3.If you think you‘ve found me I‘m coming for you next. The truth is more twisted🤔

RachelO Look forward to your review of this one - Thirteen was great! Hope he keeps it up. 2w
MidnightBookGirl I did enjoy Th1rt3en, so maybe I'll snag this one! 2w
Andrew65 Not an author I know so looking forward to hearing what you think. 😊 2w

Bk2 of my #MrBook1InAMillion #LitsyPartyOfOne #24B4Monday #readathon is done! While I did enjoy the story & the characters in this, I felt the ending was a bit rushed. It was one of those endings that felt like 5 chapters stuffed into 2(y‘all know what I mean)Still, it was not a bad way to spend a few hours. Hours stuck in bed coz my back decided today was a good day to lock up & go into spasm. Yay. At least I have plenty of reading material!

Lynnsoprano Oh, no! Hi hope it feels better soon. You‘re blowing everybody away with that reading time, tho. 😘 2w
Andrew65 Oh no!!! Just been through that with my wife who has had similar problems. 2w
Lizpixie @Lynnsoprano thanks! At least it gives me an excuse to do nothing but read, could do without the pain though😫 @Andrew65 I hope your wife is ok now, it sucks when it happens. It‘s not just the pain, though that‘s not fun, it‘s the being dependent on other people to do everything for you. It‘s demoralising. Thank god for reading. And the hubby. Him too😋 2w

Icecream break! I‘m about 3/4 finished with my 2nd book of my #MrBook1InAMillion #LitsyPartyOfOne #24B4Monday #readathon weekend. Phew, that‘s a mouthful. Definitely in cruising gear with my reading, don‘t know what to read next though. Should I stick with thrillers or switch it up again?🤔 Either way, I‘m going to enjoy my Salted Caramel & choc coated Hazelnuts icecream🍨

Ladyval05 I don‘t know what to recommend to read next, but I know that ice cream flavor sounds delicious! 🍦 2w
ljuliel That ice cream sure sounds good. And it sure looks like you‘ll easily get the 24 hours ! 2w
Andrew65 I always think the pace of thrillers or detective books is good for readathons. Impressive time as ever. 👏👏👏🙌👍😍 2w

Oops. I slept in just a bit(well, a lot)so I‘m only just starting today‘s section of #MrBook1InAMillion #24B4Monday #readathon & #LitsyPartyOfOne Kicking off with this rather battered library copy of Linwood Barclays 2nd novel about a violent home invasion that ends with an entire family dead. But what if the killers got the wrong house? I‘m sitting at just over 18hrs so far, let‘s see how many I can get today! #letsdothis

Andrew65 This was my first Barclay, and was totally hooked on him as an author ever since. 2w
Clwojick Oh, okay. Going to just go ahead and stack this one as well. Thank you. 😏 2w

Finishing the tagged book gives me the #History prompt on my #NFNov #BingoCard #TIL - the Mayor of Chicago that presided over the fair was assassinated two days before the closing ceremony by a paranoid delusional man who thought the mayor owed him a high ranking job. Well, it‘s 6am here so I‘m heading off to bed for a few hours. See y‘all soon!🙋🏻‍♀️ #MrBook1InAMillion #24B4Monday #readathon #LitsyPartyOfOne

#NFNov This book was fascinating, not just for the true crime aspect but also for the behind the scenes accounts of the 1893 Chicago Fair. That they managed to pull it off & made it as spectacular as it was was miraculous. As for Holmes, I can‘t believe he got away with what he did for so long, he had a devil on his shoulder for sure. #TIL - The designer of Central Park was the Landscape architect for the fair. #MrBook1InAMillion #24B4Monday

Lizpixie Pic is also of my snacks for #LitsyPartyOfOne 2w
Lynnsoprano Snacks look yummy! Now I‘m even more anxious to read this book. 2w
vivastory I actually found the passages about the world fair a lot more fascinating than the sections on Holmes. Great book. 2w

#NFNov Just a quick update, I‘m at less than 100pges left and I‘m totally gripped by the stories. I‘m pleasantly surprised to find that the White City portion of the story is just as interesting as the Devil portion. Who knew that 1890s architecture & construction could be so thrilling? How‘s everyone else doing? #TIL - the first ever Ferris Wheel was built for the fair & had a height of 264 feet. #MrBook1InAMillion #LitsyPartyOfOne #24B4Monday

#NFNov I listened to a few hours of Blowout, my head started to explode from the dishonesty and double dealings by the oil & gas companies so I had to stop. Now I‘m switching to The Devil, where at least you know who the villains are! #TIL - one gas company actually used an atomic bomb to break up the shale underneath a Colorado town so it could access the natural gas deposits😱 #MrBook1InAMillion #24B4Monday #readathon #litsypartyofone

ImperfectCJ I heard a story on the radio a few years back about the fracking with atomic bombs. They said they couldn't even pipe the natural gas into people's houses because it was radioactive. Good times. 2w
ljuliel Wow, look at that ! Great total so far, and I‘ve been sleeping ! 2w

I‘m a huge fan of Rachel Maddow, I first started watching her MSNBC show via podcast after seeing her on The Daily Show with John Stewart. Her ability to cut through the bullshit & fuckery of politics and get to the heart of the matter is second to none. I can‘t wait to hear what she has to say about the oil & gas industry! #NFNov #MrBook1InAMillion #24B4Monday #readathon

I fell asleep before posting this morning, I managed over 5 1/2 hrs and am over halfway through this book. It‘s midday here & I‘m still tired(staying up till dawn reading does that to you!)so I‘ll probably do an hour or so of an audiobook before getting stuck back into this. How‘s everyone else doing? #MrBook1InAMillion #24B4Monday #readathon

Just about to take a quick break to make a cup of herbal tea so I thought I‘d get in a time update. Almost at 3hrs & on pg115 which is a pretty good time for a NF book(I always read them slower🤷🏻‍♀️) Totally in love with the book sleeve from last months FairyLoot, it‘s a quote from Dracula, it‘s waterproof & has a zip so books stay where you put em. Back soon🙋🏻‍♀️ #MrBook1InAMillion #24B4Monday #readathon #NFNov

Let‘s see if I can make double the time this ‘thon! Kicking off with this NF about the Chicago Worlds Fair & the serial killer that stalked it. Who else is joining in this weekends fun?🥳

#Movember #day6 #Crave The novel I‘ve just finished fits this prompt perfectly. Anna Kate, the new owner of the cafe craves home & family, her patrons at the cafe crave the messages from loved ones her pies bring, Natalie craves strength & independence, Cam & Aubin both crave peace. Seelie craves having her son back & Pebbles just craves the company of Otis. Everyone in this town has something or someone they crave. #lovemakestheworldgoround

I was planning on starting another library book this morning but I‘m falling behind on #NFNov so I‘m giving this one a try instead. I very much enjoyed Dead Wake by the author, a NF about the sinking of the Lusitania, plus I‘ve heard great things about this so I have high hopes. It could fit a few prompts on the #bingo card, True Crime, History, Found On Litsy or Suggested By A Friend so we‘ll see how we go!😈🏰🏗🏢

vivastory I greatly enjoyed this one, I've been meaning to read more by this author 2w
Reagan-reads Erik Larson is one of my favourite authors. I can confidently recommend all of his books! 2w
Lynnsoprano This is one that‘s piqued my interest whenever it‘s come up. I‘m almost finished with my current NF, may have to consider this. 2w

What a lovely book this was! Reminded me very much of Garden Spells & Practical Magic.Set in small town Alabama, it‘s the story of a cafe,a family secret, blackbirds & mulberry trees. All swirled up with a large dash of magic. If you loved The Sparrow Sisters or any other sweet magical realism story, you‘ll love this as well. I‘m so happy I stumbled over it, I really hope the author writes more Wicklow stories.🥧🍒 #Booked2019 #FoodOrBeverageOnCover

Sace Oh that looks good. Set in Alabama is an added bonus! 2w
