A Walker in the City
A Walker in the City | Alfred Kazin
4 posts | 3 read
Kazin’s memorable description of his life as a young man as he makes the journey from Brooklyn to “americanca”-the larger world that begins at the other end of the subway in Manhattan. A classic portrayal of the Jewish immigrant culture of the 1930s. Drawings by Marvin Bileck.

Fascinating. The daily life of the author and his family is shown to the reader in intricate detail, from cooking and eating to clothing and sewing, to sleeping arrangements and cleaning. I was most intrigued by seeing how the author learned, what he read, and what and how he was taught.

Bowietrek I am finally learning to add photos, but I don‘t like this method much. 5y

Fascinating reading about Jewish life in the boroughs of New York City. I learned a little first hand when I lived in New York for 15 years in the nineties and early in the new century, until 2003. This is answering many of my questions and I am enjoying it.

"For each new book I took away, there seemed to be ten more of which I was depriving myself...The automatic part of all my reading was history. The past...was great: anything American, old, glazed...immediately set my mind dancing."

"It excited me just to watch someone read like that."
I have been soaking up fiction, non-fiction, & memoirs of NYC recently. Enjoying this 1951 memoir of a Jewish neighborhood and how books, reading, & libraries influenced the author's life. Love the sense of place in this book.
