Movie: The Wicker Man

Out of everything I have read by Machen, this is my favorite. The concept follows a conspiratorial premise in regards to a cult leader trying to apprehend a coin. While this happens, there are plots & subplots that occur in a nonlinear fashion, all regarding occult paraphernalia. There are people turning into charred blobs, ritural sacrifice, evil fairies, & more. I love how the book went full circle. Creepy, intense, adventurous, & action packed.

So far, this is my favorite by Machen. The storytelling is creepy and intense while he lends a great deal of focus to character, scene, and conflict. What more could be better than an occult group, a serial killer, and an abandoned mansion?

Machen's work is the latest addition to the horror and Halloween selections in Serial Reader. An episodic novel of weird and horror tales, culminating in a deadly horror. Linking each story is a secretive pagan society who weave a web of deception through London. A major influence on H.P. Lovecraft, helping inspire some of his most famous stories.
