Ghost Hunters: True Stories From the World's Most Famous Demonologists | Ed Warren, Lorraine Warren, Robert David Chase
Mehso-so

Work like this makes skeptics more skeptical. This should be read as nothing more than a work of fiction. The only reason I didn't rate this as a pick is because it's so full of occurrences that just canNOT happen. Also, it was pretty laughable when Ed Warren said Big Foot is a tulpa and how Lorraine communicated with the creature through psychic powers. I didn't rate this book as pan or bail, because at the very least, I was entertained.

Just finished this and loved it. The last 3 stories were my least favorite. This book is a good diversity of unapologetic literature that is ideal for any black hearted goth.

Finished this.

Pros: original story line & fast paced. It kept me guessing until the end of who the guilty parties were. Not all voodoo is evil.

Cons: racist dialogue where even heroes used derrogitory names. Maybe none of the characters were supposed to be liked? It depicted a voodoo lwa as evil although in reality, she is equivalent to the virgin mary. The end seems like the author was trying to rush to meet a deadline.

If you have never read Poppy Z. Brite, you are missing out. I just finished the story "Self Made Man" and it was brilliant.

If you are curious what to expect, imagine the nihilism of Chuck Palahniuk meets the poetic brutality of Clive Barker and the sexual explicitness of Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty series. Reading this book is like having ice water dumped down my back.

Holy crap! This was a masterpiece that has little to no sex or violence, but it is perhaps the most frightening and unsettling work I have ever read.

The format looks intimidating but if you simply just sit down and read the book, it is easy.

This is only the 2nd book i have ever read that has scared the ever loving living hell out of me.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I thought it was scary too. It made me afraid of my own bathroom 😂 6mo

When Navy renters the house, everyone who has suffered from the house has calmed. The Haven-Slocum Theory suggests this is like Jonah being cast into the sea as when Jonah entered the sea, the waters calmed.

Out of everything I have read by Machen, this is my favorite. The concept follows a conspiratorial premise in regards to a cult leader trying to apprehend a coin. While this happens, there are plots & subplots that occur in a nonlinear fashion, all regarding occult paraphernalia. There are people turning into charred blobs, ritural sacrifice, evil fairies, & more. I love how the book went full circle. Creepy, intense, adventurous, & action packed.

blurb
BookwormOfTheDamned

So far, this is my favorite by Machen. The storytelling is creepy and intense while he lends a great deal of focus to character, scene, and conflict. What more could be better than an occult group, a serial killer, and an abandoned mansion?

That is trippy. Although the block of footnotes on page 119 say there are no windows in this labyrinth the footnotes on page 120 is the exact same as the previous page. It seems as though this serves as a window that is allowing the reader to gaze through..... Wait! Maybe these are mirrors?!?!?

Did anyone else feel this way?

I can't get this out of my head, but a few pages before the hallway appears, there is a rant and great emphasis on the word "echo." For some reason, and this will sound weird, the echo rant added depth to the house's modification for me. It was enlightening in a knowledge scense but suspense building in a story sense.

The Manitou | Graham Masterton
Pickpick

This book kicked ass and my only regret was I didn't have more time to read it in one sitting. It is honestly the most unique knock off of "The Exorist" that i have ever encountered. It is flatout supernatural suspense until the end when it becomes a huge gore fest. Also, the book provided a unique social commentary in regards to how America's bloody past rides on the backs of all Americans and one day it will come full circle for revenge.

blurb
BookwormOfTheDamned
House of Leaves | Mark Z. Danielewski, Zampan

After reading about the origin of "echo" in a Greek mythology sense, which I suspect references how the hallway in the house is like a neverending echo, we learn more about Johnny as he & Lude partake in shrooms & other drugs. In this time Johnny starts fantasizing about murdering his boss, such as twisting his head off or throwing him out a window. During his fantasy, a stripper, who he calls Thumber, enters the tattoo parlor, who he crushes on.

blurb
BookwormOfTheDamned
House of Leaves | Mark Z. Danielewski, Zampan

I've read online a few reasons why "House" is always printed in blue. 1. It is supposed to represent a blue screen (same as green screen in movie making). 2. Since parts of this book floated around online before it was even published, the blue is supposed to indicate the text is a link to a website. #2. Makes more sense to me because the house is obviously a link to another world and I could understand the symbolism there.
