Married Love
Married Love: And Other Stories | Tessa Hadley
4 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
"A supremely perceptive writer of formidable skill and intelligence," (New York Times Book Review), Tessa Hadley is the author of four critically acclaimed novels, including The London Train, a New York Times Notable Book. A regular contributor to The New Yorker, Hadley returns to the short story form in this brilliant collection, her first since the celebrated Sunstroke and Other Stories. Married Love showcases beautifully her formidable talent for writing domestic fiction that rises about the genre to become literary art.

*Ally read novels, wrapped up in her duvet beside the central-heating radiator in her bedroom, borrowing them from the centre & the public library, sometimes finishing one & starting another without even changing her position or getting up to make coffee, like an addict...She imagined the reading that she did now as like climbing inside one of those deep old beds she'd seen in a museum, with a sliding door to close behind you...*

I hadn't realised this was all short stories. Usually I wouldn't be bothered about reading it but I found most of them pretty good. Some felt they just stopped but I guess that's like a snippet of a life, s snapshot.

A really strong collection of short stories. Instantly you are connected and immersed without having to force it. The characters are all easy to relate to and so much is carefully hinted at and revealed through actions in a way that lets you draw your own conclusions.
