While the Duke Was Sleeping
While the Duke Was Sleeping: The Rogue Files | Sophie Jordan
13 posts | 21 read | 9 to read
Sometimes the man of your dreams . . . Shop girl Poppy Fairchurch knows its pointless fantasizing about the Duke of Autenberry. Still, dreams cant hurt anyone . . . unlike the carriage Poppy spies bearing down upon the unsuspecting duke. After she pulls him to safety, the duke lapses into a coma and Poppy is mistaken for his fiance. But one person isnt fooled: his arrogant and much too handsome half-brother, Struan Mackenzie. Soon Poppy isnt sure what she wants more . . . the fantasy of her duke or the reality of one smoldering Scot who challenges her at every turn. . . . is not who you think. An illegitimate second son, Struan may have built an empire and established himself as one of the wealthiest men in Britain, but he knows he will always be an outsider among the ton. Just like he knows the infuriating Poppy is a liar. Theres no way the haughty Duke of Autenberry would deign to wed a working class girl. It doesnt matter how charming she is. Or tempting. Or how much Struan wants her for himself.

While I found the romance side of this one enjoyable, I cringed at the concept. Everytime Poppy missed a chance to iron everything out just made me uncomfortable. I know that the old misunderstanding, miscommunication, wrong end of the stick mechanism is important in these types of stories but this missed the mark for me and I couldn't buy into it completely.

This was a quick, mindless read but nothing special. On the plus side upon finishing it this morning, I have reached my #JubilantJuly goal of finishing 6 books!

This book took a little while to get into but was delicious toward the end.

Very “no means yes” in the interactions. No thank you. Had potential, but I‘m turned off by the overbearing hero just taking liberties and the heroine secretly loving it. Will not continue with this author. 👍🏼👍🏼

Eeh. Between this and the 2nd book (read first), WTDWS is definitely the better book. I liked Struan and Poppy, but it needed a little more character development and for Poppy to challenge Struan more. A quick read and amusing in spots, but hollow in others. Definitely read it if you‘re going to read the second and third book. I‘m looking forward to Autenberry‘s upcoming redemption in the third book. (The second is about Strickland and Graciella.)

Considering the movie this is based on, I expected a nicer hero. Not that Struan isn't great in his own way, but it was a miss for me in terms of a good adaptation.

not one of my top favorite historical romances (almost a tossup between a pick & so-so), but it was a fun & entertaining story of a shop girl who is mistaken for a dukes fiancée after savings his life & then inevitably falls in love with his half-brother, & of course lots of chaos & romance ensue from there 🌟🌟🌟

My first from Sophie Jordan and I will definitely be reading her other work! While slightly unbelievable, the story was incredibly sweet, the tension between Poppy and Struan was toe curling, and the family relationships were absolutely relatable. Such a fun Christmas story!

It was ok & following the plot of the Sandra Bullock movie was fun. H/h were good (if not very deep) and I enjoyed the secondary characters. But I did a TON of scanning bc the middle dragged & I even skipped the epilogue. If you love historical romance you'll probably enjoy this. If it is something you only read once in a while I would recommend skipping it.
