Memoir of a Debulked Woman: Enduring Ovarian Cancer
Memoir of a Debulked Woman: Enduring Ovarian Cancer | Susan Gubar
5 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
A 2012 New York Times Book Review Notable Book "Staggering, searingMs. Gubar deserves the highest admiration for her bravery and honesty." New York Times Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008, Susan Gubar underwent radical debulking surgery, an attempt to excise the cancer by removing part or all of many organs in the lower abdomen. Her memoir mines the deepest levels of anguish and devotion as she struggles to come to terms with her bodys betrayal and the frightful protocols of contemporary medicine. She finds solace in the abiding love of her husband, children, and friends while she searches for understanding in works of literature, visual art, and the testimonies of others who suffer with various forms of cancer. Ovarian cancer remains an incurable disease for most of those diagnosed, even those lucky enough to find caring and skilled physicians. Memoir of a Debulked Woman is both a polemic against the ineffectual and injurious medical responses to which thousands of women are subjected and a meditation on the gifts of companionship, art, and literature that sustain people in need.

Please forgive the non-book-related post, but ladies of Litsy, please take a minute to read! It could save a life! Did you know early detection is key when it comes to survival rates for ovarian cancer, but it's rarely diagnosed in early stages because symptoms are vague and can be attributed to other common problems? That's why it's called the silent killer! #KnowTheSymptoms #OwnYourOvaries

Pickpick

Great, unflinchingly honest book. I struggled to follow the more philosophical explorations of attitudes towards death and illness, but the personal account is a superb (and uncomfortable) insight into the reality of living with ovarian cancer.

BarbaraTheBibliophage This looks like my kind of book! 8y
arlenefinnigan @BarbaraTheBibliophage it really is excellent. 8y

(I'm about to play Litsy catch-up so hang in there, friends!) #MemorableMemoirs for #Booktober
1.Memoir of a Debulked woman - not the easiest/quickest book to get through but informative and important. #ovariancancer is a silent killer that's crazy hard to detect - learn about it ladies!! 2.Furiously Happy- hilarious and smart; a new look into mental health for me 3.Yes, Please - Poehler has it right with this quote - "good for her! not for me"
