Worthy Brown's Daughter
Worthy Brown's Daughter | Phillip Margolin
6 posts | 8 read | 2 to read
Known for his critically acclaimed contemporary thrillers, New York Times bestselling author Phillip Margolin explores intriguing new territory in Worthy Brown's Daughter, a compelling historical drama, set in nineteenth-century Oregon, that combines a heartbreaking story of slavery and murder with classic Margolin plot twists. One of a handful of lawyers in the new state of Oregon, recently widowed Matthew Penny agrees to help Worthy Brown, a newly freed slave, rescue his fifteen year old daughter, Roxanne, from their former master, a powerful Portland lawyer. Worthy's lawsuit sets in motion events that lead to Worthy's arrest for murder and create an agonizing moral dilemma that could send either Worthy or Matthew to the hangman. At the same time, hanging judge Jed Tyler, a powerful politician with a barren personal life, becomes infatuated with a beautiful gold-digger who is scheming to murder Benjamin Gillette, Oregon's wealthiest businessman. When Gillette appears to die from natural causes, Sharon Hill produces a forged contract of marriage and Tyler must decide if he will sacrifice his reputation to defend that of the woman who inspired his irrational obsession. At Worthy's trial, Matthew saves Worthy by producing a stunning courtroom surprise and his attempt to stop the deadly fortune hunter ends in a violent climax.

I should have bailed. This book was all over the place, jumping from one event to the next and back again. The description at the back is misleading - the story is not at all about saving Roxanne Brown, which could have been an interesting court case to follow, especially had it involved a deeper look at the juxtaposition of racism and law in the late 1800s. Quite frankly it reads like a soap opera.

I‘m just starting Worthy Brown‘s Daughter and so far it‘s got tight pacing and a no-frills, very direct description style, like I imagine most Westerns have. Happy that I get to learn about #Oregon‘s history!

And this is a screen cap from a #tiktok I did for #Jolabokaflod PDX, the litfest I run: you guys want to hear from authors on Dec 19-20?? Check out our schedule! Www.jolabokaflodpdx.com 🎉🥰🤩

Bailing on books left & right. 😐 I have a pet peeve about audio narrators imitating gendered voices. This one‘s female voices were just too affected and silly, was totally distracting.

CoverToCoverGirl I recommend you try the book then, this one is unlike anything else he‘s written, and so worth the read.. sometimes I wonder how some readers are chosen because they certainly are not all created equal! 6y
Tamra @CoverToCoverGirl totally! I liked the premise, I just couldn‘t get over the narration. 😑 6y
cathysaid I get it. I'm pretty hard on narrators. They've got a tiny window in which to make me like them 😁 6y

Pickpick

I liked it. I like a morally just ending. A little more literary heft than I expected, just a nice solid read.
