Valiant Gentlemen | Sabina Murray

Following her "New York Times" Editor s Choice collection of short stories "Tales of the New World," historical fiction master Sabina Murray returns with an epic and bold novel of friendship and betrayal set across four continents and a 40-year time span In prose that is darkly humorous and alive with detail, "Valiant Gentlemen" reimagines the lives and intimate friendships of humanitarian and Irish patriot Roger Casement; his closest friend, Herbert Ward; and Ward s extraordinary wife, the Argentinian-American heiress Sarita Sanford. "Valiant Gentlemen" takes the reader on an intimate journey, from Ward and Casement s misadventurous youth in the Congowhere, among other things, they bore witness to an Irish whiskey heir s taste for cannibalismto Ward s marriage to Sarita and their flourishing family life in France, to Casement s covert homosexuality and enduring nomadic lifestyle floating between his work across the African continent and involvement in Irish politics. When World War I breaks out, Casement and Ward s longstanding political differences finally come to a head and when Ward and his teenage sons leave to fight on the frontlines for England, Casement begins to work alongside the Germans to help free Ireland from British rule. What results is tragic and riveting, as both men are forced to confront notions of love and betrayal in the face of the vastly different tracks their lives have taken. Reminiscent of the work of Peter Carey and Michael Ondaatje, "Valiant Gentlemen" is a uniquely human account of some of early 20th century s larger historical figures from a ravishing ("O Magazine") and brilliant ("The Boston Globe") voice in fiction today."

Bailedbailed

Picked it up because I've read about Casement and love that whole period in history but just couldn't get into the prose.

Bailedbailed

Darn! Bailing after 75 minutes. I had high hopes but this book relationship is not for me. I appreciate the sense of historical detail but I'm not in the mood to be inside a colonial mindset in early twentieth century Congo, where the local adult workers are treated as if they are children.

My current audiobook downloads from Hoopla. Pit Bull was great. While I've started another audio (SPQR, from OneClick) I think I will take breaks from it with a different book. Which one should I listen to next?

BookishTrish I've heard only good things about 8y
NerdyRev Lions is on deck for me too. I loved Lamb in a not creepy way. 8y
Lindy @BookishTrish Well, I just bailed on Valiant Gentlemen, after listening to an hour and a quarter. Nice historical detail, but I guess I'm not in the mood for colonialist attitudes. 8y

So very good! Historical fiction about Roger Casement, Herbert Ward, and Herbert's wife Sarita. Going into this book I had know idea who these people were but so glad I took the time to get to know them.

@Liberty convinced me to pick up this book. ❤️📚 I found the audiobook on Hoopla! 😍 If you're interested and also frequent hoopla's free digital library, the ebook is available too. 🙌

Wish me luck! The audiobook is over 20 hours. 😳😂

merelybookish Good luck! I started it on audio but found it required more attention than I could give it. 8y

Pickpick

A humorous, delightful, & sometimes sad novel about the four decades of adventures & friendship between real-life historical figures Roger Casement, famed Irish patriot, & his closest friend, Herbert Ward. Starting w/their time in the Congo up through their differences in opinion politically during WWI that broke their friendship, this is one of the year‘s most wonderful novels, & the one I'd most like to see picked to be a TV series. - @Liberty

charl08 Intrigued - what's her take on the black diaries? 8y
jveezer That sounds like something I'd love. 8y
