The story of Beauty and the Beast finds new life in this magical and imaginative retelling thats filled with romance and adventure. By the time her sixteenth birthday comes around, Belle feels more convinced than ever that she is being called by the wrong name. Unlike her older sisters Celeste and April, whose names suit them perfectly, Belle knows that she is not beautiful. She begs to be called by her given name, Annabelleor even Anna for shortbut to no avail. Her solace is her wood-carving hobby, and she longs to find the Heartwood tree: Legend has it that, when carved by the right hands, it can reveal the face of ones true love. One day, during a fierce storm, Belles father stumbles upon the fabled treeonly to become ensnarled by it and come face-to-face with a terrifying and lonely Beast, who will set him free on one condition: that Belle carves the Heartwood. Belle agrees, never dreaming that she and the Beast have the same wish: to be seen not with the eyes of the mind, but of the heart.

My favorite Disney character -my book version

This wasn‘t my favorite read. For a retelling of beauty and the beast I thought it would be similar to the Disney one but was not other than the fact that they both contained a cursed man and a lady which must save him but only by love.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. The premise was there, but as of chapter ten, Belle seems too vain. Not quite how I want to picture her. Hopefully it gets better.

An interesting retelling of Beauty and the Beast in which Belle is a gifted wood carver.

Belle and the Beast don't even meet until about the last third of the book, so the development of their relationship is brushed over pretty quickly. I still enjoyed this version, especially the legend of the Heartwood Tree.

I like that this was an easy book and it wasn't all about the romance. It was finding yourself beautiful and family relationships. Good easy read

Dokey has lots of experience writing retellings. She did a huge mass market series in the late last decade or so. I wonder what she will bring different to this one.
