'They were inescapable, the tensions of the adult world - the fraught and febrile aura that surrounded Ishtar and those in her orbit, that whined and creaked like a wire pulled too tight.'It is the winter of 1985. Hope Farm sticks out of the ragged landscape like a decaying tooth, its weatherboard walls sagging into the undergrowth. Silver's mother, Ishtar, has fallen for the charismatic Miller, and the three of them have moved to the rural hippie commune to make a new start. At Hope, Silver finds unexpected friendship and, at last, a place to call home. But it is also here that, at just thirteen, she is thrust into an unrelenting adult world - and the walls begin to come tumbling down, with deadly consequences. Hope Farmis the masterful second novel from award-winning author Peggy Frew, and is a devastatingly beautiful story about the broken bonds of childhood, and the enduring cost of holding back the truth.'Completely absorbing. Hope Farmis elegant, tender, and very wise.' Chris Womersley, award-winning author of Bereft and Cairo

I was captivated by this tense (in a good way) coming of age story. Recommend for anyone who liked Educated. (ARC from @LibraryThing Early Reviewers)

Bookwormjillk @BookishMarginalia thanks so much! Luckily I have plenty of rocky, weedy places in my yard to choose from 5y

One from my 2019 #TBR .... From the blurb, it seems like the name of this farm gives #falsehope .....
Sounds ominous! 😳

Tex2Flo LOL, can‘t help but think “body farm” when the image is all ground and leaves and such... 5y

Today's opshop haul. Went to the Toronto library summer book sale (like I do every year) but there was only rubbish left😭 luckily I scored at the Salvos! I love a good scrapbooking magazine (if only I had time to scrapbook). The French phase book is because I am off to France this year to be a bridesmaid in a castle for my friend gorgeous friend Astrid!

There is little hope at Hope Farm. Instead this is a story of people who slip between the cracks of society, trapped by choices they made when there really was no other choice available to them.

LeeRHarry Nice choice 👌 7y

A forced, but necessary break from A Little Life while my Kindle charges, is the perfect opportunity to start a physical book using my new bookmark.

Another great Australian read. Hope Farm captures the fraught emotional frustrations of growing up and not fitting in, and the painful compromises we all make for love. She captures Australia in the 1980s with atmosphere.

Any book that opens with a quote from one of the best Atwoods has to be good

The writing and mood were tremendous, but I struggled and struggled with Ishtar. Her neglect of Silver, her self absorption, her seeming failure to learn from mistakes just made me so angry in the end, I couldn't keep going.

RealLifeReading Pity! It has a great cover 8y

A lovely, melancholy, compelling story of a mother & daughter and the way their lives turn upside down while living on a farm commune. Tinged with hope & regret, it tells the story of people totally on the margins of society. I really liked it.
