Loved this. Gorgeous, lyrical writing with a sprinkle of magical realism. It‘s a forbidden love story set against the backdrop of the 1974 Cypriot civil war, and present day London. The descriptions of the island were just gorgeous, and themes of nature, identify, trauma and renewal, handled with such care. Narrated by the two lovers, their daughter and surprisingly by a fig tree at the center of the story, this sad story really captured my heart.

Alfoster It was so interesting and different!😃 6d

I picked up a signed book of this gorgeously illustrated picture book on Black Friday at B&N (being a total Padma fan girl!) The story is beautiful, touching on themes of family and tradition, shared stories, seasonal and local food and the respect for the farmers hard work. A wonderful message, and a perfect accompaniment to Padma‘s fantastic Hulu series, ‘Taste the Nation‘. What I found most touching was….. ⬇️

KarenUK the memories of cooking with my own mother, mother-in-law and step-mother-in-law over the years. I treasure the recipes, and these moments so deeply. This book makes a lovely gift for any reader. Each month, features quotes, beautiful illustrations and lovely short essays on recommended reads that fit the mood of the season, not just the setting or weather. It captures the ‘feeling‘ of reading in a way that speaks to how I feel about my reading life. Perfect for a moody reader! And definitely a book I will dip in and out of often…. Thanks @Andrew65 for this fun challenge! My final pick for #12booksof2021 #12thbookof2021 #December is this fabulous short story collection from one of my favorite authors.

These stories absolutely shine…. So full of heart, love, sadness and hope… Lily King‘s writing is so gorgeous, every character so relatable, each story full of beautiful detail and nuance. This is one of the best short story collections I‘ve read in a really long time.

This is the only month of the year that didn‘t feature one of my #Top21in2021 so took a bit more thought!
Its about 2 women, and their lifetime of friendship with all it‘s ups and downs, and the man they both marry (at separate times.)The writing is beautiful, and the characters so nuanced, as their lives ebb and flow. I love a novel that seems simple, just a study of three people as they age, but digs so deep. Emotionally complex and engrossing.

#pop22 #abookyouknownothingabout

I seem to be on a roll with Italian novels! Such great writing. It‘s got a very meta/ post-modern style… the main character being an author writing a novel, that is THIS novel. It could have been really pretentious yet the definitely unreliable narrator, manages to be just self-aware and honest enough, to remain compelling. (Continued in the comments….)

KarenUK Each of the five sections focus on significant women in his life - His on-and-off-again lover, his wife, his sister, his sister-in-law and his mother. And these women just come alive off the page, so vibrant and fascinating, so his toxic masculinity is over-shadowed. Whilst plot is scarce, the writing is so gorgeous, I couldn‘t stop reading….Loved it! (edited) 2w

This is one of those surprises. I discovered this novel by accident, just drawn by the title, and for me, it was darn near perfect. A second chance love affair told by Mike, in brief vignettes, about the love of his life, June. It‘s also a love letter to NYC, to music, to the weather. The dialogue is fantastic, the writing is gorgeous, music fills its pages, and friendships, and small talk and food are celebrated. I couldn‘t have loved it more.

Gorgeous writing and a beautiful sense of place. It‘s a story of a guarded woman and an environmental experiment, reintroducing wolves into rural Scotland. The small town is as hostile as the brutal landscape, and violence and fear begins to threaten the project. Mysteries unravel, questioning the nature of predators and their prey. The nature writing is lovely, and the story of twin sisters intrinsically linked by their trauma, is gripping.

Mixed reviews but my fangirl adoration of Rooney continues! Complicated friendships, the minutiae of every complex thought about romantic entanglements, all the messy, confusing relationship stuff, is just totally my jam.
Alice, Felix, Eileen & Simon, navigate millennial life, express every thought yet somehow miscommunicate, and struggle to completely connect. I loved the third person POV, paired with the emails between best friends. Loved it.

MallenNC I loved this one too. I think with another author I wouldn‘t have as much, but there‘s something about Sally Rooney that works for me. 3w

Gritty, unsettling, TW galore but oh so good. It‘s a compelling story of Joan, a damaged young woman taking back some kind of power, with a California-noir vibe, and full of rage. At times a victim, at times she is cruel and almost always making terrible decisions. I love Lisa Taddeo‘s writing, it creeps under my skin. I love how my every sense felt assaulted, every aroma she describes, every gruesome event, so real. Dark, dirty and brilliant.

This was one of my most fun reading experiences all year. GUP, Gay Uncle Patrick, is a hilariously bitchy, playful, reclusive prima-donna actor who by a tragic circumstance, has a summer of taking care of his little niece and nephew. It‘s funny and heartwarming and heartbreakingly sad at times, as Patrick and his charges, navigate their new world, and the awful losses they have endured. A perfect summer read.

I found this compellingly strange, beautiful in one moment, ridiculous the next, and totally and completely heartbreaking. Part 1 is a fragmented portrait of an on-line life, the style mirroring the fleeting connections, and yearning to belong. After a tragic family event in part 2 shocks our protagonist into ‘real‘ life, it becomes something entirely different. A story of love and grief. Unique, creative and yes weird, but really, really good.

As Ali Smith says in her introduction to this novel, “it‘s about nothing much, and yet about everything.” Lovely minimalistic prose, a semi-autobiographical story of two women, an artist and a writer, as they work and live alongside each other. To me it was a story of art and love. I‘m each vignette, small acts mean so much, and the ease and companionship of their friendship was so special. Quiet and lovely.

Not for everyone but I loved this.. so much! Perceptive and raw. Yes it was uncomfortable, as I saw my younger self in this unnamed protagonist. A dark psychological portrait of an insecure young woman, and it really got under my skin. She defines herself by a love unrequited, a toxic relationship with a beautiful cruel man. So many TW, for self harm, disordered eating, verbal and physical abuse. This girl felt familiar and alive.

This one was easy to narrow down. One of the most moving books I‘ve ever read.
An unnamed woman who is an end of life carer, visits someone dying of AIDS in each chapter, each chapter named for a part of the body, reflected in the story.
The compassion, empathy, dignity, kindness and humanity in this book was just astounding. I feel so strongly about end of life care, and this book was perfect.

RaeLovesToRead I'm also going for Six of Crows for a duology... although on GR there is a Six of Crows 3 listed (?!) The only other Duologys I can think of are Strange the Dreamer (💙💙💙) and Love Virtually/ Every Seventh Wave (which I also loved...) 1mo

4thhouseontheleft @RaeLovesToRead the 3rd Six of Cros book comes out in Feb 1mo
RaeLovesToRead @BarbaraBB A duology is a series of two. (Like trilogy is a series of three). Books don't tend to come in twos so it's a difficult one. @4thhouseontheleft Six of Crows is referred to a lot as a duology, so I might count it and pretend the 3rd is a sequel 😏 Unless anyone has any other recommendations? It's a tricky prompt. 1mo

RaeLovesToRead @KarenUK Are you using Death on the Nile as the cruise ship prompt? I was thinking of doing the same, although it is also being made into a film in 2022. (Although I may use Salem's Lot for that one...) 1mo
Cortg This is fantastic! I agree with @BarbaraBB A Little Life is one of my all time faves, but it'll tear your heart out. I've started penciling in my list but I want to take some time to go through the physical books on my bookshelf to see what I can read and pass on. I seem to have some chunksters on my list, which is probably not helpful for this giant challenge, but we'll see. I'm sure I'm feeling way too optimistic going into the 2022! 1mo

It‘s all about the atmosphere, which is an unsettling, unknown dread and a mysterious event that is occurring ‘off-screen.‘ A family staying at a remote Air B&B, are unexpectedly confronted with the return of the possible owners, and the loss of communication to the outside world. The Omnipresent narrator, POV-hopping works so well. Tackles race, class and human behavior in crisis so well. Not for anyone who likes an ending tied up in a neat bow!

A teacher and his ex-student, start a volatile love affair. After a huge fight, they agree to tell each other their darkest secret that they‘ve never shared with anyone. Soon after, they break up. Yet the hold they have over one another, lasts a lifetime. It‘s a book of unreliable narrators, performative personas, and the complexities of love, lust and loyalty. This novel, left me wondering… in a good way. But be prepared to be left in the dark!

Ruthiella Ooh! I love that premise! 1mo
BarbaraBB Me too! Stacked! 1mo

Sitting on my back patio, watching the sun go down, some Chilled out EDM tunes, a good book and a big, icy glass of rose…. Heaven!
This picture barely looks real, but my hubby took it a few days ago in our back yard. I feel so lucky to be able to enjoy this every day. Florida is a strange place to live at times (!) but you can‘t beat the sunsets….

Inspired by Verne‘s Phileas Fogg, yet more of an imaginary journey of reading, it‘s an armchair travelogue to counteract the pandemic‘s restrictions on physical adventuring.
It‘s such a unique take on the ‘books about books‘ genre (my personal catnip),exploring the world through literature, connecting us as humans, through universal emotions, through fictional characters. A true book lovers book, and this would make an amazing reading challenge!

I do love a sharp and witty satire of marriage and suburban ennui, secrets and lies, and those rich people problems that are my comfort read (for some strange reason!)
Three couples, a sleepy Connecticut suburb, their lives all revolving around a private school, with it‘s somewhat unusual philosophies and domineering head mistress with questionable connections in the past. Perceptive, amusing, and heartbreaking at times, a really fun read.

squirrelbrain Sounds right up my street! Is it ‘schooly‘ or dark enough to work for the dark academia prompt for #booked2022, do you think? 2mo
KarenUK Mmmmm…. It‘s not officially dark academia, but definitely a super weird school, so I say go for it! ☺️ @squirrelbrain 2mo

With echos of Woolf‘s Mrs. Dalloway, this short novel focuses mostly on a single day, with musings of the past. As Liselle preps for a dinner party on the evening that her husband‘s political ambitions have been dashed and an FBI investigation are underway, she looks back at a significant affair with Selena, a woman from her past. Steeped in sharp observations on race, sexuality and politics, it‘s a well written story, let down by its abrupt end.

Cinfhen Excellent review! Book sounds perfect until that abrupt end. #petpeeve I hate that!!! (I feel cheated) 2mo

I really loved this novel about two women, and their long term friendship with all it‘s ups and downs over a lifetime, and the man they both marry (at separate times.)The writing is beautiful, and the characters so nuanced,as their lives ebb and flow, together and apart. I love a novel that seems simple, just a study of three people, as they grow and age, but digs so deep. Emotionally complex and engrossing. Couldn‘t put this down.
